Working in retail is a good way to make you hate people more.

I just quit a few days ago, because we were so undermanned that they were pushing me to do the work of 3 people with nothing in return. No chance of a raise or anything, so I left. I waited for months hoping things would get better, because I didn't want to be part of the problem, but I can only take so much.

The work itself was easy. My customer skills are excellent. Only one person had ever gotten upset with me in my entire time there.

Yup. I used to work in retail. Not the best job, but it isn't the worst either; all depends on the people that shop there really.

In more important news, after I voted the poll reports to me that 103.8% of people voted "Yes", with 67% of people voting "No".

I worked in retail to put me through most of college. People often took their frustrations out on me. Typical in most retail jobs. Management was often chosen unfairly, through friends, family or lovers lacking experience. To compensate for the lack of experience, fear was used to keep structure causing everyones morale to decrease. Many employees started doing the bare minimum and never going above and beyond for the customer or the company.

I did learn valuable skills from retail. Patience being the most important. Losing patience and snapping back at a customer caused many of my friends and coworkers to be fired. The store followed the “customer is always right policy”.

I also learned how to deal better with people. Before retail, I couldn't stand people period. I started to notice trends within people, and how to get into their minds slightly to deescalate situations quickly. I could detect by observation the actions most customers make before they decided to make the choices they would make. It was like watching sheep. Being that I originally disliked society before retail, being around so many people gave me a opportunely to observe and study people. At one point that was fascinating to me.

Retail was also a plus for my own personal business, understanding the needs of the customer and exceeding their expectations will make them long term customers. Even drawing more clients for you.

I've worked food/grocery retail during High School. I sell to other business now as a college grad - I admire people who can do well in retail. I think genuine, positive attitude is rare, but contagious.

I'm work in a discount shop, we're short staffed as the company heads are saving all the money they can.
Only thing that annoys me are some of the customers, especially the ones who just dump stuff where it doesn't belong
