GZ, There are plenty of samurai characters that are samurai.
If they are in a feudal Japanese age, [historical setting, fictional events/characters] serve a feudal lord,. and are born or adopted into a samurai family, they are a samurai.

The latter isn't often mentioned so if there is no mention of a character's background yet they have the first two criteria, it can be reasonably assumed that they are a samurai as they wouldn't serve a lord if they weren't part of a bushi family. Ronin, however are not samurai. Lest anymore they are not.
For instance, if you had a job as a chef but quit and became an exterminator you wouldn't still call yourself a chef, right? Just as a samurai must serve a feudal lord.

Desfines, The word samurai is defined as a feudal class following those criteria. If an opinion contradicts fact it is called a fallacy. Afro is not a samurai no matter his skill.

A samurai is a samurai. It is what it is. If one's opinion disregards fact it is a fallacy, and no longer a valid opinion.

I haven't found even found a DECENT anime samurai OR swordsman yet let alone a good one.

Why? Well none of them embody the life of a samurai. It's all about swordsmanship (which they all seem to fail in.)

As for swordsmanship, either they; 1. Swing the sword around like a baseball bat. 2. Have a ridiculously huge sword that no one can realistically wield. and/or 3. They dash around like those Hollywood ninja (which is also an incredibly inaccurate view as shinobi no mono were spies, not assassins or killers.)

So when I find a decent one I'll post it.

I see many people list Kenshin. First off, he's not a samurai so he doesn't belong here. Being a samurai means you were born or adopted into a samurai family. He wasn't even a ronin. He was a traveler (Rurouni) who happened to learn swordsmanship from some crazy drunk who lived in the mountains.

I personally hate Samurai X because he claims to know "Battojutsu" and yet he never uses it. He expounds incorrectly that battojutsu utilizes the speed of drawing the sword when speed and strength have nothing to do with a sword fight. Blech. They raped the image of Gensai Kawakami (who wasn't a samurai at all.)

Actually, "Shinobi no mono" means "Shinobi's stuff/item/thing/", not the people you mean to express. It's ok, though. It took me 4 years to get qualified as an interpreter. It's even harder if your married into a japanese family that's from a different area, because some phrases are different. Ex.; In the western tongue, "Yarou, nanishitonen?,Naniyutenen?, or even names for things are unique from other parts of Japan. Actually, Samurai were actually ALL warriors. The modern concept of Samurai came from Tokugawa Ieyesu's promotion of the samurai during his reign. Actually, also, having taken Battoujutsu lessons in Yokohama, the Samurai X "Image is correct. The strength does not come from your upper arms, but your wrists.

Lol, most of the things you said are neither fact or opinions, but false statements. I lived in Japan for 7 years, doing full contact fighting with kyokushinKaikan, having quit Battoujuttsu lessons after my first year. ( My hands are my swords). None of the information you have stated is correct. My wife Miyuki can't understand where you could have learned Japanes from. Maybe now, "Samurai" has new interpretations, but judging from your "facts", you need to hit the books.

My opinion of best anime Samurai would be pretty much all Shinsengumi anime concepts. Those guys were amazing in real life.
