Post Reply How on Earth do you argue for so long?
Posted 6/14/16
Some of you can argue for what feels like weeks. You go through like 20 quotes to get a point across.
How do you do it? Do you thrive on argument like I thrive on ice cream? Do you sleep?
When I have a dispute with someone I'll go through like 4 or 5 quotes at the most and then I decide it's pointless, stop caring too much about what the other person thinks of the issue, and move on. I'd rather just plant the ideas in someone's mind and then get outta there before things get too hot. Some of you go all in and really fight it out. I don't read what you people say because I have other things to do but you sure do use a lot of words. That must take some effort. Even religion which I feel very strongly about I won't even argue as much as some of you because I know it's pointless to argue it too much. You can't force that sort of thing. You can only plant ideas and try and make a subtle change. Religion is just an example. Don't make this thread about religion. I will probably be annoyed if you do. There isn't even much point to it. This is a forum on an anime streaming site. Your opinion wont even really affect anything unless you go out and change things. Even when argument is that pointless you'll still argue. Is it fun? Some of you seem to enjoy it. Do you honestly feel that strongly about all of your opinions? We're talkin' paragraphs here! Paragraphs! Link too! Sources! This isn't really to put you down or anything. I'm impressed honestly and heave a respect for certain users who argue like this. Most of you seem smarter than me or at least more knowledgeable. I just don't understand how you can argue for so long.
Why don't you do your thing and educate me on the subject?

People like to be right, or look right. Some will go to greater lengths than others... I can enjoy a good honest conversation, and arguing CAN be fun, depending on what you're in it for... I've argued for days online, just because someone was way too into it and it amused me to keep it going, haha...

If I really take an argument too far, it's probably because I feel passionate about the subject. I also type very fast though, so a paragraph takes a minute.

I think some people just want to/must have the last word

People like hearing (in this case, seeing) themselves talk about something they think they know about. It makes them feel good to play the role of the one that knows what is right, because it is common to wish to be better than others.

I want Prince to reply this.

Personally I understand the appeal of arguments but rarely go far enough to write those long chains. Maybe you just really need to love the topic.

I've always enjoyed civil debate. However, there are simply some topics that people are unlikely to discuss civilly and most people already have their opinions set in concrete on those topics so I find it rather pointless to continue even if I have good logic and supporting evidence.

Just looking at the topics that become huge debates on here, I finally understand something my mother told me. My mother is a retired high school English teacher. One piece of advice she gave me repeatedly as I went through school and had to write various papers was to never choose a depressing or negative topic. Her reason was that teachers get really tired of depressing topics and are unlikely to give them good grades. Looking around Crunchroll at the topics with the most posts or that get the biggest reactions I notice she is right - almost all of them are depressing or about negative things. Perhaps that is just human nature, but boy it does make me skip over a lot of the threads here.

I get the feeling long internet arguments are actually just a bad way to avoid having an existential crisis.

^This.

Essentially it is to consolidate my own thoughts and learn from others. People seem to get the wrong idea and think the majority of the reason is to simply be 'right' (it's only partially so).

Most of the time I do not have a clear grasping of my own thoughts. I use other people's arguments to test and decipher my own.

If I'm spending the time to type a long reply, it's because I respect the other user enough to do so. I disagree with most of the people I get along with, but what we often have in common is the ability to accept the arguments of others and reforge our own--given rational justification to do so. This makes discussion seem cordial despite our disagreements (it rarely even appears to others like a disagreement). I find this fun. It's always been a way for me to connect with other people. It's one of the few ways I know how. I enjoy seeing the way people look at things--how they think--how they reason.

If I'm merely jesting/poking fun--that is more of a sign I am engaging with my ego for fun. People that pop on those threads just to point out how "dumb" people are to be talking so extensively on those topics display a lot more ego than those legitimately participating. They're "too good" for it. They "have a life". They're not like those "show-offs". They're too "cool" to be wasting their time like "those people". Etc.

To those people: Great. Good for you. You do you, bruh.
