So after watching many anime I thought if there is a need for me to learn Japanese. I think I have a trend of not following what I said but who here thinks they'll learn Japanese in the future? I mean it's for recreational purposes and possibly a better gaming experience, but really to get to know the culture means you need someone to speak it right?

aside from gunsmithing I teach Japanese and Okinawan to elementary aged students in evenings. Okinawan is becoming a very rare language. It's not a dialect of Japanese.

I try to learn Japanese off of an app call " Memrise' I learned Hiragana but I do mess it up at times. But for the love of my life I can't remember " Katakana". It nice to learn a language at times but not needed unless you are maybe planning on living in a area where they only spoke a certain language for a long time but beside that, just be you are do what you want to do.

I've started learning to Japanese myself and so far it's really interesting. At some point I will need to find somewhere to practice using it by actually speaking to people who have some self control and wouldn't die of laughter at the mistakes I make

I've been watching anime for about 30 years and I only know a few words but I couldn't form a sentence. My French is better than my Japanese. LOL

I've tried to learn more but I just don't have the focus and dedication to do it. But if you're interested in learning, try Rosetta Stone (or take a class at a local college).

As for the culture, you won't learn much about the culture by learning the language and speaking it. Culture and language are two different things. Take English for example. Look at how many cultures speak the english language. I will agree that being able to speak a native language can help understand a culture better.

If you want to learn culture you'll have to do some reading (books or online) or have a Japanese friend to teach you. The best way to learn is to immerse yourself in the culture, but thats a little extreme for learning recreationally.

Good luck and have fun.

I'm currently studying Japanese... slowly. I hope that by the end of the year, i'll actually be able to read manga. I mean, I can "sort of" "somewhat" read manga, but I find it confusing, and i'm constantly having to look up what so many words and kanji are.

I wouldn't mind it, but it's not the only language I want to learn.

I really should get around to learning it completely. Having the wife translate for both her family and I is kinda embarrassing.

I've taken a year and a half of Japanese in college and was, at one point, at a conversational level. Ever since my friends moved back to Japan, though, I haven't been able to use it, so I kinda need to relearn it. I was also bad at kanji, but I can understand sentences and phrases easily enough.

I should pick something up so I can brush up on it on a dialy basis, but I keep forgetting inbetween my other leisures.

Sorry folks, but there's a very similar thread that was started just a few days ago, so I'm closing this one. Please post in that existing thread:
