Berserk, which is weird, cause my opinion towards that is almost entirely based on the manga.

I'd have to say Cowboy Bebob, because it just blew everything else I had seen away.

But as far as the more abstract and artistic parts of a "Masterpiece" go, something like Fooly Cooly (FLCL), is probably at the top of that list.

Edit: I'm glad we agree

Code Geass.

Other things that people have mentioned have better animation, I'll give them that, but in terms of story (what happens - the characters, their relationships, their motivations, their actions) and plot (how it presents the characters and their actions to the audience), Geass is golden. It has its bumps in the road, but really, those don't ruin it.
The story and plot, the writing and direction, are just so solid - and, the other thing that sets it apart, the scope. The sheer scale of that story, the size of the cast, the multi-generational plot threads, etc., and how it manages to hold them all together and make it work coherently. It's a truly solid piece of work. And the main character is one of the most amazing, inspiring characters I've seen in anything.

And he's beautiful. Which is important.

Cory on the House!

Sorry, had to vent that old joke out. Anyways, I'm thinking Steins;Gate is the masterpiece of anime... must be because I don't really watch new anime series like some mentioned here (Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, HunterxHunter)

And seriously, I saw someone saying school days.... like Joseph Joestar would say: OH, GOD!!! it's one of the worst animes I've tried to watch.

Without hesitation, it is Aria that pops into my head.

The one show to influence the way I think and feel on a personal level. A true work of art.

Sometimes I question whether I should even consider it with the rest of the shows I watch. You know how many places stopped listing books like the Bible as "most read" or "best selling" because they are kind of a given? That's sort of how I feel about Aria in most topics like these.
