Correction: possibly extinct.

The authors of the paper that concluded this later wrote that there is a possibility an unknown population might survive on Papua New Guinea. This is in Australia Geographic. Nobody is calling full extinction until that area is thoroughly surveyed.

So they knew their numbers were dwindling and were like 'meh, small islands are fine' and let it be?

I think this extinction is in part due to negligence.

Also it was the rising sea level to be sure, or one of the tsunami in the past decade that damaged the habitat? Feels a little like jumping to conclusions.
