Seems like a majority of people I meet who watch anime eventually start learning Japanese. I know one or two who don't (yet), but the longer you watch, seems like the more likely you are to slip into the I-must-know-what-they-are-saying syndrome, which is beyond the mere understanding-what-is-repeated-alot.

Obviously, I leave "enough" open to interpretation, more along the lines of "some degree of watching exists for each individual such that they will eventually study Japanese after this level is reached".

Edit: Thread should be moved to General Discussion, but I don't have ability to do that. Mod help plz?

Anime, no. Indulging in visual novels and niche Japanese doujin that don't get English translations, yes, it seems like people will eventually want to learn it. It seems like people who are into the less mainstream Japanese media end up being more likely to end up actually learning, too, instead of half-assedly trying to learn.

I've been watching for years and don't feel the need to learn, although I can't deny the benefits you obviously get from doing so!

I'm sure some phrases or words will eventually stick especially when OP uses the word 'enough".
But I believe the more subtle parts of Japanese culture are more powerful like pop culture and mannerisms desu.

Learn Japanese language from just watching Anime, is not a good practice from my point of view. You must listen and practice new words from stories, news for that you have to opt a online Japanese course which contains a sound collection of Japanese Examples with meaning.

While it's because of anime that I started learning japanese, I don't see it as an "obligation" or natural path to take for every otaku.

I personally like to get the "full picture" of a subject, so I'll naturally try to get a general understanding of everything that composes it, in the case of anime, I had to get to know how animation is done and learn its original language. But for someone that just likes it as an entertainment, there is no need to go that far.

I'm far to lazy when it comes to languages. I am severely dyslexic it would be like pulling teeth for me.

From a lingustic standpoint, anime is actually really helpful for Japanese learners. Audio is essential once you know the basics, however if you claim to have "Learned Japanese through Anime" You're either 1.) Lying 2.) Delusional.

Now, i think that watching Anime once you know the basics of grammar and the particles that go along with it + Some vocabulary is a road to learning the language rather effectively!

I've been watching for 12 years, and no, I don't have the urge to learn Japanese.
I'm not fond of languages, and it's hard to learn a new one as an adult.

No. I love anime but frankly if I'm going to put forth the effort required to learn another language it's going to be for a better reason than that.

Nah I'd say the fact my adoptive father was a Japanese immigrant had a lot more to do with my learning Japanese then my love of the anime world.

You aren't going to learn any Japanese from watching anime. You may learn the meaning behind a few phrases but that's about it
