Post Reply If I have a girl I want to give her a Japanese name

I wouldn't give my child a Japanese name unless the mother was Japanese. It just doesn't seem right. You would be the mother though, so you can decide what to name your kid.

Sweden have laws forbidding you from naming your child to whatever you want, so for me and my potential child it won't happen. But that doesn't stop me from calling someone a jap name, may be a bit weird tho

Do.. what you want? The only people who would complain are those who can't look past a skin color/body structure.

Just like a lot Asian people in the states have western names.

If I have another daughter and the father is all right with it, I want to name her Sakura Hinata. At first it was because of originally liking those characters in Naruto, but I lost track of the show and haven't watched it in ages, so now I just want to because of the meaning because it means cherry blossom sunlight. And this is coming from someone who is half-Polish, half-European mix with a plain, normal name.

Like here in Finland.

That being said there just happens to be rather many names that are the same in Finland and in Japan, especially girl names.

There are quite a few that I'd avoid though. Like Aki (common Finnish male name), Hinata (to tow something), Hana (faucet), Hanako (that faucet?) to name a few...

If I'd for some reason live in Japan and I'd have a child(ren) that are mixed I'd probably pick something like Hikari for boy and Hotaru for girl. Then I could call them Kari and Taru... and be sure that their actual names don't sound funny as names there.

I've already decided to call my future child Naruto/Sakura depending on gender.

Not unless by any chance the mother was Japanese, and it was important to her. I'm not so fickle about it, but if I ever had a girl I would want her to be called something like

Ingeborg

ING: goddess (my god)
BORG: protection, shelter, fortress (walls)

Combination of words can mean: [Beware] Under the protection of Ing, or protector of Ing. 'Borg' is considered something that can withstand any force. In any case, she is in unison with a powerful god, so you probably shouldn't mess with her.

Sigrid

SIG: win, victory, victorious, siege, besiege, conquer, conquest
FRID: wonderful, beautiful (beyond reason), "something that causes wonder, amazement, tranquility", "something that makes one lose ones ability to think, lose ones will to fight"

Combination of words means that you are predestined to lose against this person.

Both names have a connection to my sister's name whose name basically hints that she is--, or is of the goddess Frøya.

If I ever have a son, I will call him Wilhelm, Friedrich or Franz! Yes, I would make a horrible mother...
