Hey, my girlfriend is a big science nerd but never watched anime before. I'm trying to think of some good anime to introduce her to in my ultimate plan to hook her onto anime and gaming. Suggestions please?

Time of Eve might be worth a shot if she likes sci-fi. It is a short series of 15 minute episodes exploring the relationships between intelligent robots and their human masters.

Space Brothers!

Not only is it about astronomy and space travel but it's heartwarming, realistic and has no fanservice or violence to scare her away.

What kind of science? If she's interested in food chemistry maybe she'll like the weird silliness that is Moyashimon

As the user above said, you can never go wrong with Ghibli movies, almost all of them are amazing. I second Space Brothers, but I also recommend Fullmetal Alchemist given that she is into science, watching a show about alchemy which was the early beginning of modern chemistry might amuse her, but of course the show has a lot more fantasy than actual science, I just thought it would be a nice option. But still FMA is a wonderful story, so either way I believe she will be entertained.

Well, sometimes you can. I honestly don't care for Ghibli movies, and while I recognize them as having a fairly wide appeal, I'm not sure they really serve that well as a gateway to non-Ghibli anime, or to anime series rather than movies.

I just think that Ghibli has a special appeal that makes them easy to get into. I've seen plenty of people who don't usually like anime but they love Ghibli, but I can totally understand why it wouldn't work as well as other shows like Space Brothers, Fullmetal Alchemist or even other movies like Ghost in The Shell or Akira.

If your ladyfriend has a penchant for quantum physics and time travel, may I be the first to recommend Noein?

If she likes sci-fi maybe try Lain?

Or Haibane Renmei? Not so much sci-fi but another thought provoking masterpiece from Abe. Also, Haibane isn't as much as a mind f*** as Lain so it might be easier to swallow. It starts slow, but that's part of its charm and the story builds well.

If she might like a bit of romance with her sci-fi Saikano would fit the bill.

If you want to try something with a realistic storyline and loaded with emotion there's Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. Not reccomended if you want to avoid tragic shows that might leave her in tears.

None of these are necessarily "mainstream" but I like them because they do a great job dispelling a lot of the stereotypes generally associated with anime.
