So been seeing a lot of old threads come back after months to a year of no activity.
Should CR put in something that locks the threads after 3-6 months of no activity?

If not, can we get a necromancer badge for resurrecting a dead thread

We've been doing year-end cleanups (locking and closing the very old threads) the last couple of years, which cuts down a bit on that happening with very, very old threads. (When I first started on crunchyroll there were threads that were many years old still accessible to post on even though they hadn't been posted to in years!)

That would be fun!

Personally, I don't see the big deal with livening up an old thread most of the time. I mean, as long as you aren't expecting to start up a conversation with someone who posted ages ago, or coming super late to a "current events" type thread without realizing it's old news.

If you are commenting on an old controversial thread in an especially ugly way that seems insincere and designed just to stir things up, then it's the "ugly stirring thing up" action that's the problem (that mods can deal with) more than simply commenting on an old thread that happens to interest you.

(ETA: A few years ago, not too long before I became a mod, they closed all those very old threads, and started doing frequent cleanups to keep open only threads that had been posted to in the last 6 months. We were asked to stop doing that shortly after I became a mod, (I get the impression that maybe customer support was getting complaints about so many threads getting closed so quickly.)

It always annoys me when someone digs up a thread from months back, where the conversation has been said and done and instead of adding in a new perspective or tying the discussion to current events, they just say "I agree" or something similarly trite and waltz off.

This reminds me of on the Aeria Games forum, there was a group of guys who necro'd topics from 3 years ago on purpose, and the userbase apparently never read time stamps responded as if it were a fresh topic. Was funny, but then they started locking 2+ year old topics as a result. Bad things happen when you have too much fun.

Yes, this. Especially when its an ugly thread. Zombie threads are one thing. They're relatively easy to dispatch.

Lich threads on the other hand.

A year, maybe--We don't have a "Similar Threads" feature that, like other forums do, for some off reason always word-searches no thread earlier than 2008, but that's usually the biggest diagnosable cause of necroposting. Usually from posters with CR points in the single and double-digits.

Even without that, generally, some kid wanders in, looks about three pages back to find an interesting title, and says "Look! Why here's a thread about feminism! And here's my chance to say something about transgender rights! Wait, did I miss an important discussion on whether religion is real?"
Every. Freakin'. Few Months. By the clock.

What would the distinction be? Those DELIBERATELY brought up by bored troll posters who go to the graveyard and command a legion-of-the-dead army of ten or twelve posts from April 2015?

Well, let's just narrow down the question:

Should we
A) Auto-lock all threads that haven't seen a post since June 2015, purely as a computer-generated security measure,
or
B) Just take out a death warrant on Crazy_Monster?

Which would be easier?

sometimes i get paranoid whenever i see an told thread that i want to put a response in @@
i take like 10 minutes of contemplating whether or not i should post and end up being a pussy and not post anything at all

It's really a matter of opinion. Somewhat annoying if it was a conversation going on and restarted a year later. But if it is one of the many generic threads with no flowing conversation it basically doesn't matter. I think a year is a good cutoff for auto lock, if at all.

I noticed the mods have done quite an extensive locking session at the end of 2015, but it would really be a time-saver for them if auto-locking could be coded in.
