Today, we brush, floss, and even go the extra mile of whitening our teeth to give us that extra confidence when smiling. Back in 16th- and 17th-century England, however, a fad was born from the lack of dental hygiene.

At that time, sugar was very expensive because it was imported into the country. Therefore, only the upper class Elizabethans could afford it. Excessive use of the commodity rots the teeth. Elizabeth I lost many of her teeth because of her love for sweets, and people could hardly understand her when she spoke. The few remaining teeth in her mouth were black and decayed.

People began seeing black teeth as a status symbol. People whose teeth were not black enough applied cosmetics and used coals to blacken them.

Incidentally, despite the lack of care for dental hygiene, Elizabethans did everything they could to prevent bad breath. This was perhaps because people believed the plague could be contacted from the bad breath of those around them. They used vinegar, anise seeds, and other similar herbs to clear their mouth of bad odor.

No. I was told by a man from Georgia that some families in the South ween their kids on milk and mtn dew mix to quiet them down. You can't fix that, it's ingrained.

Ah :/, Yea, My first thought is maybe its the med she on. Someone I know had barely black teeth but more of a shadow.. I jokey asked her if she been drinking too much Coffee, she told me its the med that causing them.. :/

Well I was getting all kind of idea why that teenage got bad teeth, I figured maybe med, or her family was too poor to afford the Dentist, or she doesn't like dentist.. Some people don't like dentist and refuse to go see them.. Of course that is till it start hurting so bad they ending up go get it removed.

I do recall when I was little there was girl near my age had really bad teeth.. She got Cavities on her front teeth like almost on all of them.. It was making me sick. When thinking about it now, I bet she got them all pulled and now wearing False teeth and people probably think she got perfect healthy teeth due to young age. I bet she got picked on when she was in grade school..

So, here's a question, would you rather get graced by someone's natural bad breath or lesser bad breath + vinegar aroma?

But yes, good thing we went rather far in this respect. Even if I'm not sure why people go comically far with their "American teeth" and bleach them untill they can blind people in sunny weather. White teeth, yeah, that's good, but I don't think they are supposed to be the whitest white of the white shiny.

Just that White Teeth show that you're healthy and clean.. When you see someone with bad teeth don't that make you feel sick. By the way do you noticed lot of Movie stars got perfect teeth? From what I read recently its because they all got False Teeth! =0 I thought its because they can afford a Dentist to clean and fix their real teeth not pull them all out and replace them with fake shiny whitest Teeth in the land! XD

To answer your question.. Well I supposed that if you're living in old day and use to see all kind of gross thing.. Probably wouldn't matter, I would think everyone got bad breath! XD Of course I assumed Lesser bad breath + vinegar aroma is like brushing your teeth in modern day otherwise it'll be same rarely brushing your teeth!
