As I look at my shelf of manga next to my bed, I think back to when I first bought manga many years ago. Going into Barnes & Noble and speed walking to the anime section. With twenty dollars I could buy 2 volumes of manga and buy lunch after. Now manga costs ten dollars and I miss the old days from before.

Does anyone else remember how cheap manga used be?

Honestly it's nothing compared to the price of hardcover books. I've been in the bookselling business for just shy of ten years and the general fiction hardcover price has risen from around 20 dollars on average to around 30-35 on average. It's really ridiculous. When I buy manga it still feels cheap by comparison. But books have gone up in price just like anything else has over the past years. I feel like manga hasn't as much as other stuff, it's still pretty reasonable considering what you get.

You could never go near the manga section at my local store. It was always infested with a pack of 10-12 year old's trying to binge read all the Naruto manga without paying for them then leaving the section a complete disaster zone you could never find anything in.

I'm the only one that purchases manga in my local comic book stores in my area.
I'm also the only one who would ask the store owner if he could pre-order me some selected volumes of my manga.

People look at me like I'm purchasing Archie or something while they worship their DC comics or Marvel comics at the corner.

Dude, I purchase alternatives too. Relax. I like Wolverine too just like the next guy.

Cheap it used to be? I remember having to drive 300 miles to get to a REAL ANIME STORE (uphill both ways in three feet of snow in 120F weather) to get manga or anime.

Actually quite the opposite....

I remember when manga wasn't popular...anime in general really wasn't...

- utena
- oh my goddess!
- blade the immortal
- 3x3 eyes
- battle Angel alita

Those are just some of the manga I can think of off the top of my head that I paid $14-$18 a volume.

Back in my day you could spend your only penny on a sandwich and still have money for the bus.

Not really. Books in general have always cost quite a bit so I would wait months for the price to go down or a sale to happen
