I think me hanging out late at night with friends already makes us look sus enough, I don't need a big heavy coat to make us look even more suspicious lol

I only wear mine when it's cold and I'm out in a more upscale area. I've got a few expensive trenches (one of them was a gift and it was something like $1700) but I don't want to make them dirty.

does clothing NEED to be practical?

Also the stigma only really exists in America as i have never heard of it where i live :P

not sure why people see it as edgy it looks cool.

Any clothing that is cool or stands out people call edgy ...not sure why but its stupid as fk in my opinion for all good clothing to be "Edgy"

Im getting one myself and i'm 7'10 and a bit overweight not that it matters xD if there are better looking coats i would love to be told because most stuff looks plain and only goes for practicality which imo is STUPID

It doesn't need to be practical no, but there's also no sense sweating your balls off just to try and look cool.

Edgy just means someone is trying too hard to be cool in way that stands out or they think showcases how original they are. ;p

Well, you have the height for it. Just please God don't add a fedora.

It's the middle of summer right now so I don't need one, but come November when my home city goes from Tatooine to Hoth in the space of 30 days, I could definitely use one. That, plus I'm hoping to get my CCW permit soon, and it'd be a good item of clothing to conceal said concealed carry weapon.

Nobody wears a hat nowadays unless they're old. Don't be stupid by wearing one. Wear black slacks with leather shoes or something, a button-up shirt, and a belt of a color that matches that of your shoes. Tuck in your shirt, use some cologne.

If you wear jeans and a fedora, you don't deserve to have a trench coat. And dress appropriately for the weather. No cashmere trenches when it's 80 degrees outside or it'll look like you're trying way too hard.

Personally, I dislike sitting on a jacket as I wear them, because of the marked increase in cumulative filth. Plus, trench coats that I find visually appealing are beyond my spending limits.

People stopped wearing them primarily due to the stigma attached to them from the so called Trenchcoat Mafia and the Columbine school shooting. The shooters were called that because they always wore black and black trenchcoats.

Even before Columbine trenchcoats had a reputation of being worn by flashers, the kind of creeps who hang around in public parks exposing their genitals to passing women.

Trenchcoats come more often in shades of tan or khaki the other colors were much harder to find. Plus when you wear one for a long time you just look rumpled and unkempt like Detective Columbo from the show of the same name.

I think a number of people are mistaking Dusters for trenchcoats.

To be honest, a pea coat gives a similar look and wears well with a wider variety of clothes. While not being so cumbersome.

A trench coat looks out of place without proper attire underneath it and/or the right weather conditions.

I very rarely see a trench coat worn well. Though I think its an easier look for women to wear than men due to the attached stereotypes and stigmas.

One case might be that only certain types of people can pull them off. My mum owns one and it looks fine on her.

I am fond of my trench coats, especially my black one (in cold weather), but, unfortunately, the police like to stop me and talk to me when I am wearing that one.
