the problem is a couple of douchebags decided to go on a shooting rampage in some trench coats and pretty much ruined the whole concept of it. I made people nervous whenever I wore mine, and i was using my to protect a uniform from the rain.

^ Yeah a trenchcoat looks awesome on very handsome men. So does just about everything else.
For the rest of us, not so much.

Lmao, I was just thinking the very same thing. It doesn't matter what they wear, they'll look good in just about anything.

You need to have a certain swagger to pull off a trench coat. If you don't have it, you look like a huge tool.

For every one of these

As ^^ they said, there are people who think that wearing the trenchcoat makes you look cool. Cool people can wear whatever they want, including the coat. So people without confidence wear one, and they look sad and embarrassing, which perpetuates the public image.

There was also a guy a few years back who used a trench coat to hide his nakedness and then flash a bunch of Laker girls after a basketball game. So not only are they relatively impractical for everyday use, but they also make people think you look like a pervert or a creep.

I have a legit old school wool trench coat almost 1/4 inch thick, also in a state that it's pretty much winter 1/2 of the year, so i get to use it often, it's especial great when it's under 0.... no, not under freezing, i mean 0 to -50 cut out all the temperature and elements,i wear it because it's practical, also comfortable and stops you from feeling pavement if you slip... but what's not practical is my top hat... just couldn't stand fedoras, Top hats FTW but if it's windy i'll just rock my Ushvanka (the Russian hat with sheepskin and flaps), but like a said practicalities are a lot more important when my state can get 100 degrees colder then most in the winter, I'm winterfell the rest of you never seen winter comin, cept that guy from wy, he knows what' i''m talking about,, not being sarcastic either... last week majority of the state was in the -30 to -60.. hell we've beaten the south pole for coldest spot on earth a few times, hehe

Because it's summer

Even though it's winter in Southern California, it's summer.... It doesn't get cold enough, doesn't rain enough, and not many places have coat checks, so that you could turn your coat in and get it later. So, after you get too hot and take it off and set it somewhere, someone else will think, what a bad-assed coat! *swipe*

Mostly, I think it's because people don't really wear suits (or even just ties, really) anymore. Typical rain jackets don't really 'go' with suits, but unless you're extraordinarily fashionable, trenchcoats only really look good with suits. That, combined with the fact that it's not usually raining, means there are very few chances to wear one. And, unless they're tailored, they tend to be extremely oversized and unwieldy, which isn't a good look.

They're good for a short period of time in fall (perhaps they'd be good for all winter in places like southern california), but for the most part, you're going to need a coat for the winter, and a trench is too hot for the summer. So usually, I reckon it's not worth buying given the short amount of usage. I do have an overcoat, which is somewhat like a winter trenchcoat, but then again I'm almost always wearing a tie and waistcoat (I don't really like suit jackets), so it looks more professional than nerdy/creepy.

I don't get why people don't wear suits :/ i want to wear them all the time when i can afford to.

I plan to get most of my clothes tailored and made for me when i can since most clothing to me comes off bland and boring.
Heck im glad i found the suit i wear right now the inside has pockets and a neat design that makes it stand out from the rest
