The city of Las Vegas, Nevada has been awarded an expansion franchise. The team will begin play in the 2017-18 season.

Thoughts on this? Are you ready to see your favorite NHL team skate in Sin City?

Either this or the Raiders coming to town which is still a possibility at this point and this was eventual and inevitable that Las Vegas would get a sports franchise and now people can directly bet on a game.

The NFL won't be far behind. There's no way they'll let the NHL upstage them.

Wasn't this a billionaire's doing because it was his dream? Good to see his dream fulfilled.

I'm not too excited about the Las Vegas club; however, I am curious to see how existing clubs handle the expansion draft.

So, let me get this straight. A vanity project to set up an NHL team in the desert ( because that worked out so well the last time ) and every other team has to give up a player to them to make them competitive? But giving Quebec a team back would be unfair? -.-

Bettman is such a miserable little cash goblin.

Yes, this has the same feeling of a Deal-Made franchise that gave us the USFL (before Trump destroyed it) or the New York Cosmos soccer team in the 70's.
Desert aside, Vegas is just so, so, so, so, SO not a Hockey town.

UNLV college basketball, maybe, but not the sport of angry teenagers in sleepy Northern industrial towns where it's winter eight months out of the year.
US hockey revolves around the axis of Minnesota and Boston, all others are imitators. Salt Lake City maybe, and maybe Riley could find a team in San Francisco, but the Sun-belt states can go ahead and try.

Exactly. Its hard to be a hockey town in a location where no one else can play the sport except the guys getting paid millions to do so. Then its just a vanity sport for rich people.

Good for Vegas, and with them getting the Raiders, I'm sure a pro baseball team is next.

Most people forget Vegas has a great motorsports park and Nevada is also home to the world's fastest motorsport.

Must suck for them, they're probably used to the cold and to relocate to a hot hell hole like vegas must suck.

I'm sure they are crying even harder when they find out Nevada has no income tax.

Yes, something to celebrate the great traditions of baseball and gambling!
The Bugsies? The Roses? The Shoeless Joes?

(I'm oddly charmed by the 51's, though. )

It's not the first or second hockey team in Vegas.

Las Vegas Wranglers just went toes up, and was named most popular local sports team for 3 years.

There are a bunch of teams in Nevada that already have gambling/outlaw names, such as the Las Vegas Gamblers (aussie rules football) Las Vegas Legends (indoor soccer team)....

And let's not forget Las Vegas Posse, a Canadian Football League team back in the day.
