Ever since Funi picked up Love Live, people are getting upset and are starting to pick up the pitchfork. I'm aware that it's popular but not this popular. I decided to check out the Love Live CR has and after watching three episodes I just.................. I just could not get into it. I don't hate the show by any means and I'm not going to bash on this but I definitely didn't get into this show. So please anybody, explain to me why this show is so popular? Is it simply the Moe genre? Did I miss something? Or if you feel like criticizing me, is it because I have bad taste?

I don't get it either. To me it's just a show about cute girls doing cute things and nothing else. There isn't a plot or anything else. I guess people like seeing these girls trying to achieve success while at the same time developing a friendship and also rivalries between them, just like a sports anime of some sort. Also the music, which is probably the main reason of it's existence in the first place

But don't take my word for it, this is coming from someone who is in the same position as you, I don't understand why people like it so much, I'll even go as far as saying that to me the show is incredibly stupid and boring and it uses extreme moe as a selling point besides music, which is something that I despise.

Seems to be a popular question among non-fans:

- What makes “Love Live!” so mega popular? We asked one passionate super fan
- http://en.rocketnews24.com/2015/06/11/what-makes-love-live-so-mega-popular-we-asked-one-passionate-super-fan/

- Reason #1: The characters are so cute ♥: "To say the least, their expressions are incredibly well-animated. "

- Reason #2: The characters’ personalities are also great: "In addition to their adorable appearances, each of the nine girls has her own unique personality."

- Reason #3: The anime’s plot is compelling: "Love Live!‘s story is relatively simple, but it keeps moving at the perfect tempo. There’s no other work that explores the themes of friendship, hard work, and victory in the context of high school and the idol life like this one; whoever came up with this original combination of ideas is definitely a genius."

- Reason #4: The songs are super catchy: "The soundtrack never gets old because there are plenty of songs featuring all nine members, solo acts, and subunits as well."

- Reason #5: The voice actors are both cute and professional: 'It’s amazing how I get the sense that the characters, and not the actors, are performing. They’re definitely pros in the way they preserve the image of the animated characters."

- Reason #6: The music videos are well-made:"The camera work is really awesome even though they’re animated music videos."

Someone's thoughts on Quora:

- Anime: Why is Love Live: School Idol Project so popular?

TL;DR:
Because it had just the right formula to leverage the zeitgeist, and - despite being little more than an incremental advancement over earlier works - was admittedly the first well-funded and well-advertised title only dealing with the everyday life of a group of fictional, budding idols.

Even a video of a guy trying to explain why it's so popular:

At first I didn't even bother to check it out. When I saw it was animated by Sunrise, which is my favorite studio, I decided to check it out. Needless to say definitely not for me. Again not trying to talk smack either.

Well the answers are right above this post, so there's that, and also I don't want to talk crap about this, but I just hated it. I usually watch 2 or 3 episodes to decide if I keep watching the anime, and this one really wasn't for me at all. It's curious that from the reasons listed above, two or three are based around cuteness over anything else, just as I thought

The danger with this type of question is that you can so easily turn it on its head; "Why do people like [Hunter X Hunter / Bleach / Naruto / Dragon Ball]? The plot is so generic and drawn out that I have trouble staying awake."

The answer is basically one of taste. Few people will enjoy every anime ever produced

In answer to the original question of "why is Love Live so popular?" I'd personally discount most of the answers given in Hairbelly's post above. I watched the first episode because it was here and I continued watching because the storyline was interesting. The show had a few cliche plot lines that you could see coming from a mile away but that didn't detract much from the entertainment value (and there are very few series where I can't predict at least part of the plot line several episodes in advance).

I'll watch any anime, given enough time, as even if the plot doesn't appeal to me I find it interesting to spot the little clues to Japanese culture hidden in the warped version of reality that is anime. Even with series that are set in another world I can usually find something new to learn about Japan - for example, I picked up the extremely formal forms of address for family members from a noble family in a fantasy series (Hahaue, Chichiue, Aniue & Aneue).

Well, I can only speak for myself but the reason I enjoy it (yes I admit it *bows head in shame*) is due to the chemistry between the characters who are all well-designed to be more than 2D. It's definitely an acquired taste over here but in Japan it makes sense it'd be a hit considering the success of the Idol Culture.
