So I've been reading about how social media like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as well as internet sites like Youtube, Reddit and forums such as this one, have a major effect on one's mental health.

Basically, when we check social media, it's kind of like an addiction. We get that quick fix of dopamine by looking at posts, or receiving likes and comments, or replies to a tweet. And especially when it comes to Youtube, where you basically see a bunch of new videos on your subscription list by your favorite channels, and you click to watch, which causes a big dopamine rush. Which is a like a double edge sword.

When you get that constant dopamine, it has a negative effect on your mental health. Basically, you become stuck in a loop of dopamine, what this then causes is a decrease in productivity. Which is why it's so hard to get work done when you have your phone next to you.

When I first came across this information, I kind of ignored it, thinking it was just nonsense. But as I kept paying attention to my use of internet and social media, it became kind of clear that this was having a negative effect on me.

So I'm curious as to if any of you ever quit or took a break from all internet, and if it resulted in an increase in productivity. I have my dreams to, I just have a lot of trouble with productivity. And if I wanna get further in my life, I'm gonna have to take it easy with my internet use. I was just wondering if any of you are struggling with this as well. It's really interesting and so hidden that it's so easy to miss, but there is something going on in the backgrounds of our minds. It's like the internet is a double edged sword, you can either use it to your advantage or to your demise. Leave your opinions below

Not from all internet. But i have had breaks from or left forums. I've had breaks from certian types of porn also lol
I never used myspace much and never intended to use facebook but i do check facebook multiple times a day.

I think using face book and forums and the like can most definitely cause frustration and anger and depression and can cause you to lose sleep.
Like think about what you wrote or what others wrote while you're trying to sleep.

Eh i dunno if i had a break from the internet i possibly would go to bed earlier or possibly use my time more constructively. Maybe be more active and social and in the out doors more but i already socialize and if i spent less time on line i'd probably just play video games more or watch tv more?
Before i had the internet i was still a gamer i just played on consoles but yeah i had so much more free time not reading and typing and checking for replies all the time.
Plus i must admit that on line gaming and porn surfing and streaming shows(or downloading them) has consumed huge amounts of time and probably has effected my social life and sex life.

But after having said all of that. No i cannot answer the actual question.

This forum is the only place I go on, and I don't think it gives me much dopamine. I just use it as an outlet for my thoughts. Most of the time I don't get replies, and I don't talk to anyone, so maybe using it like this is fine.

i feel this so much, it hurts ; v; </3
i get distracted by the internet easily whenever i need to do some serious school work = -=
i dont use social media that much, i only use facebook because some announcements from college are posted there
i left twitter years ago, and recently quit snapchat, instagram, line, skype, etc etc etc.

the only ones i use actively are youtube and crunchyroll.
having less focus on social media does help me focus on my studies better
whenever i have a big project to do, i usually turn on airplane mode on my laptop to keep me from browsing sites
it's hard but i think it's just a matter of discipline - v-

just saying though, i should be doing a report rather than posting this here lmaoo--
i'll do it later i promiseee ;v;

I'm not on social media so I can't comment on that.

I have gone months without internet before though. It's not a big deal. You find other ways to keep busy and get what you need. I didn't grow up with the internet so I don't see it as a necessity.

I actually could never get into the socail media craze that everyone else has been into lately. Only reason I had facebook was because family wanted me to have it to "Keep in touch", which I barely ever post on. At this point I mainly just use it to message some online friends I met a while ago.

Other then that, Youtube I'll watch if something catches my eye but a lot of the channels I follow rarely post regularly, and if they do it is normally not more then an hour total a day. Reddit I used to be pretty active on until things stopped looking appealing so I mainly just look at my feed out of habit more then anything else.

So over all, I actually wouldn't know if quitting the internet or anything will make me more productive. I actually think in theory it would make me less productive. Most of the people I socialize with are online friends as my real life friends are too busy most times to see me more then once a week/month. So if anything I would become more of a recluse then I already am as I would probably delve into playing my backlog of video games more or reading my backlog of books and movies I have on DVD. Then once that is done I would probably only then contemplate going outside for something other then work.

Mother and I went on vacation to visit my brother who happen to not have internet at that time, he live two hours away from where I live. I went without Computer for two days, oh man the Anxiety was pretty bad, I was bored as hell.

That when I realized I couldn't live without Internet.

Been an eager internet nerd since 1998. Joined Facebook in 2006, I think it was. Left in 2010. Facebook digging for personal information, people posting moronic shit, strangers inviting me, only ones sending private messages were shallow. I haven't felt like reopening my Facebook page in years. I dodge YouTube comments like the plague. Twitter was crap. Never bothered trying instagram.

I'm quite better off, I feel.

I'd never quit the Internet

I've had to cut things out before, budget-wise.

If it wasn't too long a time I wouldn't care that much, but for the times I've been without it, sometimes weeks or even months, it's given me time to do other things, and focus more on that , which can be therapeutic sometimes considering the stress of real world-based engagements, but I wouldn't want to be rid of it forever all at once like a thief snatching it away in the middle of the night. No, thanks, I'm much too spoiled for that, it would be a bit traumatic not to suddenly not have email or stream my favorite shows. Would I live, why of course.

I don't go on social media sites at all. Only thing I do go on is forums but then I in all honesty get bored with them and take long breaks away from a forum till I get bored of another forum.

Plus just went 3 months without internet I was bored out of my mind but have internet again and well bored out of my mind lol. Plus have adhd so no idea if I have this problem or not lol.

I deactivated my Facebook about 4 years ago and haven't regretted it yet. The only sites I frequent now include this one, Hulu, and YouTube. I don't know from I could quit the Internet though. It's just too convenient.
