It's called Kage Kara Mamoru! for anybody who was wondering.

A harem anime is described as being an anime where a more of a "loser" male protaganist suddenly becomes surrounded by 3 or more beautiful woman, usually living with at least one of them, who have some type of affection toward the lead male protaganist. A harem anime is also made up of unrequited love and misunderstandings. So I believe that Clannad, Kanon, and Air fit the bill here perfectly. They are not your "normal" harem anime's, true, but they are harem none the less.

If anybody is ever confused on what makes a "harem" anime, just look it up on wikipedia. Anime like Ah! My Goddess, Ranma 1/2, and Tactical Roar would all be considered harem, even thogh it is very readily apparent who the male protaganist will end up with in the end. Same would go for Ai Yori Aoshi.

There are also reverse harem anime, such as Ouran High School Host Club, that are when one female lead character is surrounded by 3 or more good looking males. Fruits Basket is another example.

Sorry for posting twice, but I wanted to respond to this comment. Forgive me this one time, please!! lol

Of course I Know that Clannad/Air/Kanon are similar to Harems, I was just trying to point out that Harem animes can have exceptionally amazing stories, plots and cast. Not everyone has to be a loser of any sort. It's a shame the word "Harem" Has been described very Stereotypically. I Think most Harems(Most...) Are exceptionally well done. The story is amazing, and shows the lead character building up. Ah! My Goddess has a good story with romance and drama that build into something that had exceptional potential. So do Ranma and Tactical Roar. Well. what I'm trying to say is: People shouldn't think of Harems only as some perverted type of show. It took alot of great minds to create something so beautiful(Clannad, Air etc.). I Preferred not to call them a Harem because their stories were defenitely amazing. Fruits Basket would hardly make a harem to me because it's trying to teach Morals rather than trying to focus on some cheesey romance.

Well. I don't really know anymore. I Believe Harems are amazingly well done. They have great story, Amazing build ups and dramas, and I think they equally match other genres out there. I Don't see why everyone thinks Harems are just guys hanging around with other girls just for the shear Eye candy. Though Shuffle, I could say was a mini exception. He did end up with someone, but he still ended up trying to flirt with them. Though he was annoying, I was amazed by his courage near the end of the series.

~Well, None the less. I'm a very weird person. Don't mind my useless rants and such. I just want people to know that Harems aren't only about weak guys getting girls for no apparent reason. I think(Most of the time) The male protagonists deserve the female(s). Except for Really...Purely concentrated on, Stereotypically viewed Harems. Such as School Days(Once again, an amazingly built story, even if the ending was hated) and Love Love(Hated that guy >_>;, Though the females were roled well).

I wasen't trying to bash on your comment. I just found it a good opportunity to explain what a harem anime was. I hate that just because there are some bad harems, that people tend to think that they are cheesy, and shallow. In actuality, they are amazing and have lots of thought put behind them. There will always be those who bash on them, but I think that if people could just come to realize that harem's are not a passing fad, then things would get better. They are as much a staple in the anime world now as are the magical girl anime's and mecha. While harem's do provide beautifully drawn characters most of the time, you are very correct in saying that they should not be seen JUST for the eye candy and ecchi scenes that are actually essential to many harem anime.

In my response to your post, I was merely saying that while you personally can choose not to lable something as a harem, it doesn't change the fact that that is the genre that it falls under. It is hard to label something a harem when there is such a stereotypical view that goes along with that title. I think that if people could see the ORIGINAL harem's, then they would not attach such a view to new ones. Take Tenchi Muyo for example, an incredible story which is centered around a harem. I consider this show to have introduced the harem concept to the anime world. Then we have shows like Love Love that totally ruin the harem genre. I'm not saying that the characters are not good (the female ones anyway) but let's face it, that show was crap. So all in all I guess I'm saying that there are good harem and bad harem shows. It's just a shame that the good ones get such a bad rep because of the influence of the bad ones.
I agree with your view about the "loser" lead male. And when I say loser, that is also a view that is attached because of a stereotypical view of someone's character. In actuality, they are not "losers", but the "nice guys". You know the saying "nice guys finish last"? While that may be true (in high school it is SO true, personal experience speaking here) I think a big point of harem's is to show that you should give the "nice guys" a chance too. Just because they seem "weak" and a "loser" compared to our society's view of what a "man" is, does not mean that actually are. They have to pick ONE girl out of many, which is hard because they know they will hurt the others. If this doesn't show backbone, then I don't know what does. After all "hell hath no fury".
Well, sorry bout MY rant, lol. I get going on one topic, and I can just go and go. Hope I made some sense here.

Harem guys suck, they're usually depicted as some spineless or clueless wimp that for some reason or other that is left unexplained the usually near perfect heroines of the anime get attracted to (and sometimes obsessed to). From time to time, it's amusing and is worth a watch, but most of the time, it gets annoying and repetitive as the theme gets repeated throughout many anime or manga.

That is very true. I've been wondering about that myself. Why is it that most of Harem Animes depict guys as weak and spineless? Why would girls even be attracted to him?

--

Ah... I know why. Harem Animes are targeted those who can't get girls in real lives. It's an encouragement and it implies indirectly saying "ugly, and weak guys can get hot girls too". But the truth is that they really can't -_-.

You are probably young.
Woman as they "grow up" (not get older... age have nothing to do with maturity, some girl stay girls all their life and some grow into mature being called woman ^_~) they soon realise that "bads boys looking hot" are nice to look at but dont really are the style of person you wanna built something with.

Arround the age of 22-25, woman realise that the nice guys they knew in HS could have been very good father and that they wish to have them back in their life. So they go hunt "goods guys"

I know its sucks now, but your turn will come.
Im not even worry about it!

But to be back on subject:

I like those anime because often they are nice light romances. Its not like you are waiting for a guy to kiss a girl for 4736578326 episodes. Its worst than that, you have to guess which one the guy should choose. Its allows alot of different type of romance, where all the girls watching can identify themself with at least one feminine characters.
And everyone like gossip. Everyone want to know what gonna happen next.
Its also possible to create more complicated situation and make the plot better.

I always said it: when a guy and a girl get in a relationship together, they both have to give up on something very different.
The girl give up on the prince charming image. No the guy she date inst the perfect guy, but she can live with it
And the guy give up on all the opportunity he "may had" to date any others girls.

Harem type of anime answer all of those need =P

I agree with every thing but the end where it says what guy and girl have to give up stuff.
well it true that some time people have to give up on stuff for there love ones but yo say that girl have to give up on there prince charming which if you truly in love all the fault that he have you do not see love blind people and make them think the other is perfect. the same with the guy when they truly love some one then to them she is perfect but of course a lot of people settle with some one that they like but not truly love.
Me I will wait to I find that one where i would jump in front of a bullet to protect and be able to die with a small on mine face. the one where just being around is all i need to be happy. Of course a lot of people
will settle for some one they like and not wait for there one they truly love but i will wait actually i will after college be traveling the world to find the one I truly love. The job i be getting as well will help me travel the world as well.

I like harem anime...for obvious and not so obvious reasons. I prefer it when you have a show with relationships involved where it's a toss up at least for a good part of the show who ends up with who. In alot of shows, you know from scene one who the main guy will be with, but there are a few that keep you guessing...like Shuffle! Still, I want them to actually make a choice, unlike say, Tenchi Muyo, where each iteration basically ends with a no-side verdict on who he ends up with, though one is implied.

Ah, Sorry If I sounded like I was trying to pick a fight. I only really meant to comment once on the phrase, and go to my own opinion. I Got a bit out of control Because Kanon/Air/Clannad were defenitely a Masterpiece
Though I must admit, I guess they could be labelled as Harem(Though difficult to admit)
Also: "Nice guys finish last" Was defenitely something I was trying to put into my last phrase xD. It's so annoying how true it is. Though I learned, Nice guys aren't always what they seem to be.
Anyways, I really like the fact that there are people in the worlds population that understand these kind of things. Highschool sucks >_>;

Most of the harem shows I watch are for the comedy anyways so it doesn't really matter to me. But I do agree that most of the time they end up with the girl that you didn't really want the person to end up with, even though the person they'll end up with is obvious (most of the time). I also agree that it's kinda stupid how the guys never can decide on one girl or are hella clueless throughout the majority of the anime =P.

Anyways, I really like the fact that there are people in the worlds population that understand these kind of things. Highschool sucks >_>;

Hehe, true that. What fight? lol, I love these discussions. Especially when they can stay civil, lol.
I will agree with you, Air, Kanon, and Clannad are very well done and deserve a spot of there own.
