Post Reply Are viruses life?

I have no idea, ask a professional...

Yes, a simple life still counts.

Technically, viruses are not considered as being alive because they don't meet the criteria (example: can't reproduce without using a cell).

I'm kind of bummed at the lack of spider checks...

But no, as Elynne stated above, they don't meet standards of a living organism.

I don't know nor do I really care.

Definitions aren't as concrete in science as people think; they are usually rigid only to trim down on ambiguity. In the context of viruses, there may be ambiguity was to whether or not viruses are considered life (although conventional wisdom says they aren't), the fact of the matter is no real ambiguity is created by (not) classifying viruses as life.

Or put succinctly, whether or not viruses are is a pointless exercise in semantics.

Definitions aren't really concrete to begin with in my opinion.

They're living organisms so yeah. They are the simplest form of life.

But that doesn't mean it is wrong to fight them off if they infect you.
That's just self defence.

This is all my opinion though.

No because viruses cannot reproduce
Posted 12/29/16
No, they can't reproduce on their own.
