Technically, viruses are not considered as being alive because they don't meet the criteria (example: can't reproduce without using a cell).

I don't know nor do I really care.

Definitions aren't as concrete in science as people think; they are usually rigid only to trim down on ambiguity. In the context of viruses, there may be ambiguity was to whether or not viruses are considered life (although conventional wisdom says they aren't), the fact of the matter is no real ambiguity is created by (not) classifying viruses as life.

Or put succinctly, whether or not viruses are is a pointless exercise in semantics.
