If you are going to bring in those prior works for occasional comparison/contrast please put any specifics under spoiler tags and give some brief indication (either directly or through context) of what is under the spoiler. Even if they aren't spoilers for the current anime per se, they may well be spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen or read the prior material but intends to.

Well that was disappointing given all of the hype. At least the OST had some interesting stuff going on.

After a few moments of reflection on why it just didn't do anything for me, I'll first say it was pretty ugly. I'm not a huge fan of the art style in general and I don't hate CGI on principal, but this just is not a good looking show. There are a few still shots here and there that are very striking but overall, and especially when in motion, it just doesn't look very good. Second, it felt to me like the show was just built around screaming in my ear how awesome and badass and cool and badass and awesome and badass Guts is every few seconds. It's like "I know you think he's awesome. I get it. Now could we get on with actual content?"

From the looks of it, the show is starting from one part on Vol.1 and then jumping straight to Vol.14 of the manga.
As a huge Berserk fan, I thought it was good overall but my greatest fear came true..... F**K. YOU. CENSORSHIP!!!!!!!!! Arghhhhhh!!!

First of all I've never seen anything of Berserk before. And so far I enjoy watching it. They didn't explain much but it's the first episode and they showed enough to give us an idea about what could have happend. The soundtrack is pretty good. I don't really like the ending (no surprise, I'm not a big ED fan) but the rest sounds nice.

The animation:
I don't have a problem with CGI. I actually think that it's something that can look good when you make an anime with a darker theme but it almost looked like they didn't really know how to use it. The shading was too much. It looked good sometimes but when you have a scene with fast movements it's distracting. And I have a problem with the color scheme. Colors are so important when you make this kind of CGI anime and they just used the "old" color scheme from the manga (or at least that's how it looks like. I haven't seen every colored manga page). I understand why they did it but as a Berserk-newbie I would be happier if they would have modernized it.
But I'm not going to drop it because of the animation. It wasn't as horrible as expected.

I'm guessing you've never seen Berserk before? Then I guess I understand why you think that about the story. This is a direct continuation of the movies and original series so this show will probably take for a fact that you already know Guts' backstory. Given that, I highly recommend checking out either the movies or the 1997adaptation before watching this one. I'm sure they will explain everything at some point, but it's a really long story to just explain in a single episode.

Overall the episode was really good, and I wasn't expecting at all to hear the song "Blood and Guts" from the movies, that was awesome, although I guess that was to be expected since the composer of this new series is the same from the Golden Age movies. But all the other songs were good, I wouldn't say memorable exactly but they still fit the scenes really well.

I don't mind the CGI at all, but seeing how the opening and some shots of the anime were done with traditional 2D animation, it really makes me wonder why they didn't use that in the first place. Thankfully the change between the styles isn't nearly as bad as in the movies, so to me it's no big deal.

Pretty solid adaptation and I enjoyed every second of it. The only thing that bothers me is that seeing the moment in which this episode ended, it's clear that we´re not going to see the Lost Children Arc. It's a shame, but this is still way better than nothing.

I am probably one of the few that liked the style and the episode in general. After reading this discussion it makes me really glad I have never read the manga or seen anything else related to this story. I can go in clean without any preconceived notions about what to expect. To me, this episode was a complete character and style introduction.

First, this world is brutal and the show isn't afraid to show it. And second, Guts is both messed up in the head and a bad ass. I admit I love that type of character, so the whole thing works for me. At first, I didn't think I would like the way they did the animation, but it grew on me and I think it fits the atmosphere - rough and unpolished.

You're right in that I don't have much familiarity with the earlier media in the Berserk franchise, but I don't think that would have mattered all that much. In fact, I'd imagine that knowing all of the nitty gritty would have made me even more annoyed by how forced the whole "Guts is uber awesome badass, worship him" that was going on. I mean, if I knew the history already I'd actually want them to get on with it. I'd already, assuming I was drinking the same water they were, think Guts was the greatest thing ever and wouldn't need to be reminded. If even me, someone who doesn't know anywhere near everything, felt it was slathered on way to thick to the point where it made up literally the entire episode then I think they've got a real problem.

As for the backstory itself, I'm not sure I need to catch up on that. I've seen enough movies and anime and read enough books to get what happened previously just given the few flashbacks they did show. There wasn't anything there I hadn't basically seen before.
