Sympathy and Pity
Posted 2/11/08 , edited 2/11/08
-like i always say before creating a new thread, sorry if this is a duplicate, but i searched both sympathy and pity individually, and i havent seen a topic made for any of them yet

anyways i was wondering how u thought about sympathy and pity, they are both different of course, but what they do have in common is that they both deal with the exchanging of feelings and/or emotions that are projected to another individual anyways they are both different in a way that one can be usually viewed as positive, and the other as negative. so the point: What are your thoughts on both of them

Pity: More of having feelings towards another due to lack of self respect. You feel so low for the person that you feel as if you need to show remorse to them (most people wont like this b/c they have some pride and dignity to them

Sympathy: Its the feelings toward someone else to show that u care for them b/c of what they are currently going through. When someone is at a time they feel down and depressed, you tend to show sympathy for the other person (in this case, sometimes people would want you to understand how they feel) (also think of "begging for mercy" as another scenario for this)

Edit: i guess i have to change this up a bit -.-

i dont like feeling pity, and if i do i try my best to hide it. No one deserves to be pitied on. Especially if they are seeking pity. That just pisses me off...sympathy i feel alot. If i see someone struggling who are going through what i went through, i'd try my best to help them out and be super nice. That or be super cold to toughen them up so they can get through it. It depends on the situation and who the person is really....

on the post, don't you mean empathy instead of sympathy?

Pity is a hard emotion to surpress. Sympathy is better for both the person feeling it and the person it concerns.

whats the difference between sympathy and empathy? He stated sympathy up there..why would i talk about empathy?? o.o..

empathy is deathly similiar to sympathy, but empathy extends towards the "i've been through that, and i understand what you're going through" (since you said such in your original response) scenerio.

sympathy is the lack of experience of what the other is currently undertaking, but the understanding of such rough times.

looks like you just can't distinguish the difference between the two. perhaps taking a closer look at the prefix might help.

aaahhh, i see... thanks for clearing that up. so sympathy you just feel sorry for them??? o.o..thats stupid. wouldnt that make the same shit as pity?

sympathy isn't as bad as pity. pity is more like, you putting yourself above the other person in suffering. kinda like throwing a coin at someone because they are weary tatty clothing.

I don't need either of them and I don't give them out.
Those are useless emotions.

Pity- when you dont care as much but feel bad

Sympathy- when you can understand what the person is going through and actually care.
