Sorry for some reason just giggled when the little farmer girl got pulled into the maelstrom there, knew it was coming and just couldn't stop myself. CG side was nicely done as it pretty much reminded me of the Final Fantasy XIV buildup intros and such.

Have not bothered with this series yet, mainly because I know that this is a part of the "Tales of ___" franchise, so do I need to watch and/or play any of the other titles/series so that I can watch this, or can I go into this as a newcomer to the franchise?

You don't need to play the other games. Each Tales game has its own independent story.

yeah youre more or less correct. The only common thing between a few is the name of the powers. think of it like final fantasy, some common things between the worlds but not enough to make any of the games direct sequels or prequels.

Can I just say that this show has the best animation I've ever seen. Period.*
The writing and voice acting are solid too! If this ever got dubbed, all I can say is the only way is up and Funimation/Daisuki have a real banger and a contender for show of the season on their hands

*= OK, Ghibli at their prime comes close

Episode 1

I haven't seen any Ufotable productions in a long time (not counting the work they do for the Tales games) and everything is so over the top, IS THIS NORMAL????

As someone who played the game and was severely disappointed with it, I genuinely enjoyed this first episode. I'm just not holding out for it to do any better.

The game is quite underwhelming. Trying to get through it, but it's really boring.

Like I find myself rolling my eyes at the 'emotional' parts.

The only thing good about the game was the OST which was the best of any tales IMO.

I found all the characters besides Edna and Zaveid to be bland and boring which made it hard to get into the story which was nothing special not sure if Ufotable can get past these issues and make the anime good but at least the animation will be great.

The visuals and animation are fantastic, as well as fighting scenes which are superb. Fighting movements have a very special style to them. I like just about everything from this show, except the generic Japanese storyline of "they say monsters have invaded in the neighboring town" type adventure. Dragons, mysterious strangers, royalty, etc. Things are looking good for now, but I'm wondering where they plan on taking the show. Of course they have to travel a lot, I want to see more fighting scenes very often. It could be that the show is genuinely boring outside of combat scenes, but I'll leave that til I see more of the show. I'm enjoying the scenery very much. Not sure how I feel about the cast of characters, I get the feeling this is going to be heavily one-dimensional in terms of personalities. Is there any hope for character development in this one?

Just finished the game.

Yeah, I'm not going to be watching this anime. Weakest of the console games by far. Character development is told rather than shown. In fact everything is told. I still don't understand why one character was 'evil,' the game simply insists that he is without a proper explanation.

Here's to hoping they do a better job with Berseria. It really felt like they had no clue what story they wanted to tell with this. Very forgettable.

Episode 1

Now that the prologue is out of the way, the the real story for Tales of Zestiria begins. Alisha is chased by bugs, and she finds the sign of the Shepherd. Meanwhile, Sorey and Mikleo have found a ruin and they are forbidden from entering it. So Sorey goes somewhere else to explore and finds the mural of the Shepherd just before Mikleo does, but not long afterward, a fierce storm happens and they fall underground where they find Alisha knocked out crossing a hidden bridge to get there. This time, there's no action here, but nevertheless it's quite visually impressive from Ufotable. And I like that the next episode preview is done in the form of a skit from the Tales games.

Episode 2 (beyond the prologue):
Well this was quite something.

To me, this week's episode was more like an extended version of the special OVA of both Alisha's and Sorey + Mikelo's point of view up to the point where they encountered each other. For one thing, I feel bad for Alisha here as she almost loses her life and hope in the ruins.

Animation remains strong for the show and personally, I'm really starting to like the OP song of this series. Good stuff, hopefully the pacing will pick up more next time.

The second episode had really strong Legend of Zelda vibes: ruins exploration, stone activators, sacred sword, orange spirit fuzzball, village elders hiding things and puzzles (invisible bridge, etc.). Those aspects just make me excited to see what is to come. I don't know anything about the games this is based on, but it looks like our three main characters have met up.

The sacred sword is in the capital right? I guess the three will head towards there after escaping the ruins. One of the two guys will likely pull the sword and become the new Shepherd. It probably won't be that simple as some trouble could be brewing at the capital.
