Played is the right word, and uninstalled it a couple of minutes later.
This game is an attack on both the battery life of my cell phone (It was literally losing power while on its charger) as well as on my data plan.

Nobody plays this kind of game without an appropriately sized power bank. As for the data consumption, the largest part ist the imagery associated to the Stops, which are taken straight from Ingress. Blocking the CDN they are on with Adaway saves A LOT of the data required.

Downloaded the APK for it to play it early on android. Walked around 2-3 miles, found 3 pokemon. I expected them to be everywhere, I can't find anything.

As for battery, I walked that 2-3 miles and like 25% battery, I didn't find that to be bad at all for having the screen up and the gps running the whole time.

I found 3 in my house, but I'm assuming it's normal just for users to get used to the interface?
Anyways, taking it out tomorrow to try but from what I can see gas stations in real life serve as the shops in game.
Character customization is way too basic.
Like one of the comments above, it drains battery like crazy.
-- Pretty much all I have on my first impressions for now. Might add more tomorrow.

That's actually quite interesting, I may take a look later when the software's a tad less buggy.

The tutorial lets you catch a starter pokemon. You can choose 1 out of 3 there.
If you look at the map you can normally spot an animation somewhere nearby that looks like leaves being scattered. The change of finding a pokemon around these spots is higher than elsewhere. Usually you should be able to find between 10 and 20 different types of pokemon within a 1km radius. The app shows you which types are nearby at the bottom right.

The main point of the game is getting people to go outside and explore. Moving around will also go towards hatching the eggs in the incubator(s). If it behaves the same way as it's sister game Ingress there'll be the following restrictions on movement speed:
- if you move faster than 10km/h, the distance will not be counted (you cannot fast-hatch eggs by getting into a car or riding fast on a bike)
- if you move faster than 40km/h, you cannot interact at all with the map (general road safety, don't play the game while driving)

All of my friends have houses that are centers, stops, or gyms, and mine isn't anything. Not to mention, when I move in "real life" my avatar doesn't move. Anyone else having that problem?

So far I'm really enjoying the game. All the pokestops around me are churches. I even think the closest gym to me is some kind of church. Pokemon is trying to tell me something. I haven't really gone out much to explore as it's been ridiculously hot, but I have caught some Pokemon using the incense.

I am hoping when they fix the servers they offer some kind of promotion and give us a bunch of things. I've wasted all my incense and then the servers go down whenever I'm using one and when I finally get back on, the incense has like 2 minutes left.

Servers are an issue for me too, but I'll chalk it up to the launch rush.

That said, battery drain on my iPhone is significant but not a deal-breaker. I figure it'd be a good idea to get some battery packs so you have extra power on the go. There's also a neat solar charger I saw the last time I went to Cabela's, which would be nice to have as you can charge the battery packs away from a wall socket or vehicle.

The only issue I have is data - the phone plan I share with my mom and sister effectively limits me to 2GB a month (it's actually 6GB split evenly amongst us three, but mom gets pissy when we use more than our share even if we don't go over the total). So might be time to invest in a new phone plan. There's also the lack of cell service in some of the wilderness areas here in Wyoming - a shame really, as they would be an excellent place for some rare Pokemon to be hiding.

I only had moderate success when I tried it earlier today. Half the time the app would not work. I managed to catch a Kakuna and male Nidoran at my house though.

that moment when a company, which relies on ads (as well as paid subs) to operate, recommends using an ad blocker to play a game from a different company...

as for the game, i'm not sure to even try. i doubt it's as good as they show in the promotional videos...
(not to mention my hands are already full with deresute). i also don't need a motivation to go out anyway.
