Plot Summary

Set six years prior to the events of Barakamon, detailing the life of Seishuu Handa as a high school student—and a very interesting life it is.

In Handa-kun, Seishuu Handa is admired by his peers as a calligraphy genius and given the utmost respect, but Handa-kun himself is under the mistaken impression that the deference and attention he receives from the other students is actually bullying. Handa just wants to live a quiet life, but hilarity ensues as one character after another challenges his position as the school idol, and somehow comes away as a fan all while Handa is horrified and clueless.

Note: you do not need to watch Barakamon to watch this. It may help to understand the idea better about Handa's character but not really necessary.

Episode 1

That introduction is pretty hilarious with those guys wanting to make the anime called Handa-kun. Nise-kun (i.e. Faker), now that's an appropriate name for a wannabe. I was not expecting to see this going all Shirobako.

After a long introduction, the story finally begins with Handa wanting to keep a low profile. But he gets a challenge letter right off the bat and he's trying to figure out what to do with it. In class, Handa is doing his calligraphy trying to blow everything off, while writing a letter to Juri. And then Handa has his showdown with Juri to be continued in the next episode. That was really funny and totally unexpected.

Is this even ABOUT anything? Because the entire rambling meta prologue is making me not care to keep watching this. :|

Pretty funny stuff, I like most of it so far. On the technical front, the quality is weaker than Barakamon but the humor makes up for it. Loving these satires and the way they characterize titular character, Handa-kun.

Try picking it up in the second half. The prologue is not necessary for that and that's where the manga adaptation actually starts. The prologue is a lot funnier if you've read the manga. Besides those 4 characters, there are a lot of mention a lot of other characters that are going to be in the series. It might be better to come back to the prologue at the end of the season once you've gotten to know everyone. But in general, this is a slice of life comedy. There's not really going to be an overarching plot, just Handa's school life.

This was funny and a good adaptation. I was kind of surprised (in a good way) at how different they made the tone from Barakamon. I mean, the manga itself has a different tone but the music and direction took it even further. It was weird to hear a different voice with Handa's face though.

The watercolor backgrounds were a bit distracting whenever the main cast was in front of it, but I really liked the first episode. It may be related to Barakamon, but this is definitely a different flavor and takes advantage of how absurdly unabsurd the story really is.

I thought they were going to make the joke that they were making the anime when they called Diomedea and then they would act surprised and all embarrassed on what to do, but I found the Handa squad making their own anime much more funnier. Then thinking they would get sue.

I enjoyed it look forward to more.

I love it !! The fan boys were just too silly

I cracking when all of a sudden I could hear Daisuke Ono's Handa san in Nobunaga line delivery , Iit was nicely done ... thats Handa san

The prequel is about Handa and I had a feeling before hand that it does not have the feel; as Barakamon , but the same silliness though

It's certainly very different from Barakamon, but I think I might like it.

I got the feeling that most of the humor was lost if you didn't already know the characters from Barakamon.

Lost me at the beginning. The old "let's make an anime" about the main character dragged on for 9 minutes. Spent 8 minutes wondering if the show was ever going to actually start. It was a gag that just went on way too long. When it did start, it was just a different kind of annoying for me.

The characters aren't from Barakamon. They're actually from Handa-kun. You just don't get introduced to them until later. As a manga reader, it was really funny but it did set the barrier kind of high for new people. Honestly, for anyone who is trying this out who hasn't read the manga, just skip the first 9 minutes if you are not finding it at all funny.
