Because licensing anime cost money whether their old or new. Crunchyroll probably opts out from getting licenses for old anime because there aren't that many people who will watch those series.

I believe their license for a given series is for a year or two unless they get it back as catalog title (which could be awhile if it's getting DVD release)
It's kind of sad that being legal means worse service.

I've moved this over to Site Support / Minor Questions, but the answers you've received are correct. Crunchyroll pays for what they stream and only gets what they can license legally; many other sites do not.

Here's the link to the short official answer to the "Why doesn't Crunchyroll have..." question. It's from the Knwledgebase that you can access from the "Help/FAQ" Link under "Support" at the bottom of CR's web pages.

https://crunchyroll.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205137736-Why-don-t-you-have-specific-show-

Premium members can make suggestions for older shows they want Crunchyroll to try to get in the What series/movie/drama/manga would you like to see on CR thread in the Premium Members group.

Sad. Back when I subscribed and spent a lot of time here before Shinji sold out, Crunchyroll did have what I would call a lot of old anime. Not all or even close, but they did have a pretty large buttload of old titles.

I guess it wasn't profitable enough for them to keep licensing them, if the answers you got are all accurate. And in the few times I've glanced around for old titles lately, it seems like even if they are still on the site, a lot of them now throw you to the (false) "Sign up for Premium and cancel online anytime" screen even though they're not marked as Premium.
