The character designs suggested that this might be based off of some shoujo material. After researching the series though, now I know this is actually one of those more typical somewhat dark fantasy light novels like Legend of the Legendary Hero, Lord Marksman and Vanadis, Sacred Blacksmith... etc.

Not saying it won't be good, I actually have no knowledge of what will actually happen in the story. However, I have a good history of raging over certain plot developments in these types of series that happen once I am quite invested in the characters, so I will save myself the stress and just move away now.

Itka, down boy!

I like the character designs. At first they seem out of place for the action/war theme, but I didn't think about it too much after everything was in motion.

Really curious to see how this series turns out. It's not like we've never seen a lazy MC who is super powerful (judging from the last lines of the episode).

This, at least so far, isn't what I expecting at all. Based on the pre-release summary it sounded like your super typical light novel harem BS and yet it actually has some developed characters and heart to it. In a way, I'm almost getting a little of a Grimgar vibe from it. And it looks really nice too. Strong start. I'll definitely be coming back next week for more.

Got the chance to watch Episode 1, so —

That they are. Instantly memorable, and Madhouse is as good at animating them as always. Very clean and colorful. Certainly the best-looking show I have seen so far this season.

And the writing is dialogue-heavy, but intelligent. Definitely worth following, IMO. Glad I added this one to the queue.

Ugh. That introduction scene was painful. Sounded stiff and fake trying to sound light and amusing and it wasn't.

In fact I was finding everything painful to watch, and had pretty much determined this would head fast to the drop pile, but...

Hammock scene. That was when I started liking it, and caring about anything to have to do with it. Everything from then on had me wanting to watch. This show saved itself to live another week with it's strong last few minutes.

Yeah, I'm definitely having some mixed reactions too. The first 1/2 I was bored out of my mind when I wasn't cringing from the horrible dialogue and forced introductions/humor. I'm not sure if I'm going to like this one but I think I'll watch another episode at least just to make sure. I've see plenty of good anime's that got off to a shaky start so I think I'll try to at least follow my 3 or maybe 4 episode rule on this one just to find out.

I think the characters personalities stayed solid and the animation was good. The lips weren't as noticeable as I thought they would be through most of the episode. However I still miss the character art from the manga. Especially Solork, it really lost a lot of the punch of calling the other dude a pretty boy when he looks like one himself. I don't know if they LN author didn't like the way the manga looked or maybe it was Madhouse's call but I think at least his character is better in the manga.

I linked it in the original thread when it was announced but here is the comparison. I just think he ended up looking really generic and it doesn't reflect his personality. Main grill in the manga after he gets touchy feeling with Haro says that he isn't that handsome but he still tries to seduce women anyways.

That's one "political/war" genre manga on my list finally getting its show.

What's left:
Shoukoku no Altair
Rain
Ravages of Time

Though I am a little disappointed with the "generic anime" art style of the characters.

This show really came out of no where for me. I actually assumed it would be like a harem style anime like so many of the ones from last season and the season before it. The first episode was very nice in terms of plot structure and character setup. I hope the rest delivers.

Ep 1

I loved the character designs and the overall feel of the world, but the first half was much more boring than expected. Things did pick up in the second half, and last few minutes in particular. I've got a feeling that the story is going to be very interesting. It looks like magic is a thing in this universe, so I'm hoping the next episode explains a little about that. MC is cool so far.

Well, I have to say that was a boring and poorly executed introduction scene. It felt like I was riding a train and got dropped off in the middle of the wilderness. The exact feeling was more like Tokyo Ghoul S2 to be exact. I mostly gave the show a try based on a promising cast with 2 of my favorite VA's, but I'm seeing there's a lot to like here. While the story seems like the generic "let's fight the bad guys because let's fight the bad guys", plot progression was quite nice. Character personalities individually are quite dull imo, but they do seem to interact really well. Action seems like it will be interesting even though we haven't really seen that yet. And then there's a redhead MC. The visuals are quite nice, with a pretty cool setting. I'll be keeping an eye out for how they use the soundtrack, it has some nice mellow themes I like. Hopefully the 2nd episode slows down a bit and solidifies the theme.

Episode 2

Ikta's strategy works like a charm, and those three have been killed while Ikta got some pretty valuable info from the attack. So to get back, Ikta puts his plan into action where he uses the stolen blimp as a negotiation tool, while posing as an enemy soldier, and everybody is safely back home. One month later, the lieutenant general is KIA'd and that prompts the princess to turn those five into soldiers and make them serve. That was pretty much more setup for big things to go down and while the story is engaging, things have been slow to develop.

I didn't think I would like this anime but so far it's been really good. Looking forward to a new episode next week.
