if you have windows 7 i would stick with that (in my opinion best OS microsoft has ever made!) if you have windows 8 I would upgrade to windows 10 since it's just an upgraded version of it.

You can't turn all of the data collection completely off.

and you can't prevent windows 10 from ruining your day and updating in the middle of work.
someone was rendering photos/videos on adobe or something, and the update pretty much came and ruined everything.
someone else was doing a livestream. had all the options configured to not update in the middle of stream, but there it came and ruined the livestream.
of course, this is not even taking into account the build-in keylogger and what-not.

Well it's not easy, you can if you use Spybot Anti-Beacon.

I went from a relatively clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM to Windows 10 Home x64. After doing some very basic troubleshooting and disabling unnecessary settings and services I found everything run much smoother. Another plus is that the interface isn't Windows 8.

The main downside I've run into is that running Dualshock 4 Windows in exclusive mode has the annoying step of closing Steam, games, and explorer.exe before wirelessly connecting the controller.

It has NEVER updated while I was working on something. It always updates either at the scheduled time or when I next shut-down. The only time where this was a problem was when it decided to update when I shut-down during a power outage. No harm done though since my backup battery had my back.

We also have some business computers that we keep on Win7... What a surprise they didn't automatically upgrade right? Did we run an update blocker? Nope. MS is very guilty of wording their upgrades in a way that is biased toward you answering that you do want Win10... but if you read and answer carefully assuming you have a decent grasp of language you will be fine.

It not as effective anymore as Microsoft changed the name of the Windows 10 telemetry service in an update last November and Spybot hasn't update Anti-Beacon to account for it. While you can still find and disable it manually, Windows will periodically re-enable it.

The service is now called Connect User Experience and Telemetry instead of Diagnostics Tracking Service.

I like Windows 10. I've had no problems with it. The only program I had to reinstall was ccleaner.

I had windows 10 but went back with windows 7 it felt like a dumb down version of windows that was locked down. I also didn't like the tracking of it without fully understanding it and what it collects and who it sends it to how long its stored etc. I think I am done with PCs after this windows 10 made me want to stop using PCs. Once my current pc dies I am think it will be my last pc I build

Why not just pick up the digital entitlement so you can upgrade to windows 10 whenever you want? It'll take some work but you can just go back to windows 8 after you get it done.

That's rather annoying, but not surprising, without all that how are they supposed to work with advertisers and stuff alike.

My problem being with windows 10 that many my loved old school games won't anymore run on windows 10...so until they fix that issue i won't be upgrading-or in my eyes- downgrading to windows 10.

Thing is i see my private computer part of my space and my home. Would you like to get screens in your home giving you adds to watch after set intervals?i feel like it's invasion of my privacy.I understand why there are adds on internet pages, but they should stay strictly on internet i think.

This is exactly why Microsoft collecting data through Windows 10 bothers me. Google collects data through the services they offer you, but those services are free and you can opt to use a competitor. Windows isn't a service, it's an operating system and you rely on it for everything you do with your computer. Linux, BSD, and Mac are all alternatives to Windows, but because Microsoft has such a stranglehold on the market, much of what you want to do with your computer (like play games) may not be possible without using Windows. For the moment, it is still possible to avoid upgrading, but Microsoft used underhanded tactics to try and force people to upgrade through Windows Update.

The spying is also a little more severe than most people think. Unless you own the Education or Enterprise editions of Windows, it is impossible to completely stop the harvesting of data. And if you do own one of those versions and turn it off completely, it messes with Windows Update in a way that makes it impractical for anything other than business customers to deal with. My understanding is that even 3rd party tools can't completely stop the data collection in the regular versions of Windows 10. True, if you read about what is collected, you may not care or may find that you are comfortable with the level of control you are offered. But it is ridiculous that a product you pay for has this kind of junk in it. Sure, the upgrade is "free", but if you go out and buy a copy of Windows 10, it harvests data in the same way as the "free" upgrade. As a consumer, I don't feel Microsoft is entitled to make money off of me twice.

I also dislike Microsoft's lack of transparency. Even if you read the documentation, it's not 100% clear what exactly they collect. Further, by default, all of the privacy invasive features are turned on, making them opt-out rather than opt in. There is also no one centralized location you can go to to manage the data Microsoft is collecting. You have to wade through a ton of screens to find it all, and most users aren't going to do that or even know that they should.

Nothing about Windows 10 is revolutionary enough to make me believe it is worth supporting a business model I don't agree with. That, and I happen to be among those who experienced crashes and hardware incompatibility when I gave it a try earlier.

My laptop overheats and shuts down when I try to download it. I googled how to possibly fix that problem and found out that other people with HP laptops were having overheating issues with Windows 10 even after it had been successfully downloaded. Now I'm not so sure that I should get Windows 10

The Windows 10 upgrade messed up my previous laptop so bad that I had to get a new one. So needless to say it didn't make a good first impression on me.
