Understatement of the season!

Indeed. I couldn't have asked for a better cast. Such amazing talent and wonderful voices. I saw the preview and my jaw dropped at all the names and I knew I was going to be watching lol.

Wondering when making the show if the VAs just do a dramatic read and then the puppeteers act it out or if its vice versus like doing an anime? I like the Va's doing the show and the story is good

It's explained in episode 0... Urobuchi wrote the script in Japanese, then it was translated into Mandarin and that's what the puppeteers read while filming the scenes with the puppets. Then, they translated the script back into Japanese (for any adjustments made while filming) and the Japanese voice actors dubbed over the original Mandarin dialogue that was used filming. It was a complicated process and in episode 0 they were talking about how amazed they were that the Japanese voice actors were able to fit some of their lines despite the line length and allotted time.

Urobuchi was also very excited about the cast they were able to get for the characters, and for good reason. They got an extremely talented cast.

Thanks for heads up went back and watched episode 0 pretty amazing stuff

Hmmm.. not sure about this episode. This style of "animation" doesn't really work as well when used in a dialogue heavy context and this was a fairly talky episode overall.

I still find the puppets to be creepy, but the sound design for this completely overshadows its context and is amazing.

This is hype. Sad people dropped this because of the way they decided to portray this. It's fresh and shows the creativity of the developers to actually make something amazing using puppets.

I am so happy with all the positive feedback I am seeing for this show. This is a type of story known as Wuxia or Martial Hero in Chinese. It's a type of Chinese fantasy genre that in all honestly pulled me out of a bad place about 8 months ago. These are some really interesting stories that are fascinating to read (I hadn't seen much if any Wuxia/Xianxia animation) so I found a bunch of novels on Wuxiaworld and Gravitytales as and few other translation sites. Some of them are pretty meh but there are a few mindblowingly well done ones such as Battle Throughout the Heavens, Transcending the Nine Heavens, Desolate Era, Martial World, True Martial World, Coiling Dragon and a bunch of others.

If you love the kind of stuff you are seeing through this anime, please do yourself a huge favor and start reading some of these novels. I guarantee you will find one or (most likely) more to your liking.

Episode 3

This show is great. XD
It's setting up a nice adventure and the characters are amusing. It's a good old get the gang together, pass through deadly obstacles, and defeat the bad guy story.

Pipe dude is hiding stuff. Wonder if he's the sorcerer or related to him in some way, like an apprentice. He's not just some random dude.

You can almost hear Shang cursing once he realizes he's become part of the group. XD

Demon lady looks fun. Can't wait for her and pipe dude to interact.

Those Chinese names are so hard to pronounce, regardless still good so far. The level of details on the costume and background is amazing.

I can't help pronouncing the spear dude's name as Juan (Spanish).

Especially since we never actually hear them pronounced. The VAs are all using Japanese pronunciations that are nothing like the original. So Shāng Bù Huàn turns into Shō Fu Ka and Juǎn Cán Yún turns into Ken San Un, etc. I kinda wish they had just used the Japanese pronunciations in the subtitles. As it is, it's really confusing. I have no I head what to call these people because I don't know how to pronounce anything in... what is it? Chinese or Taiwanese?

Ah well, that's really only a minor complaint for an incredibly awesome show.

The Romanized names are Mandarin Chinese pronunciations, which is Taiwan's official language, though other languages/dialects are spoken on the island as well.
