I'm an engineering designer

I design microscopic circuit pathways

I don't want to give away the company I work for, but there's a very good chance you're using something, or even multiple things I've had a hand in designing as you read this.

Honestly I've never planned on being an engineer but here I am. I kind of wanted to be a scientist when I was young. Oh well, close enough!

Not much advice for people except to just stick with it and tough it out. That's pretty much what I had to do so I just did it.

Don't fuss too much about dreams or plans or whatever- It doesn't make sense to me to try planning your whole life out because it seldom if ever goes to plan ANYWAYS. Just find out what kinds of stuff you're interested in. There's nothing worse than being stuck doing something that you've got absolutely NO interest in.

- What did you want to become growing up

A wizard

- Did you achieve it, or still pursuing it, or has you goal changed

Not quite. I'm still pursuing it.

- What role are you currently in

I'm a software engineer in the defense sector; it's the closest thing to wizardry that I've found.

- How long did it take you to get to your position or into your career/ How old are you

Three and a half years getting a dual major BS in Computer Science and Pure Math./ I'm 29 and I started my degree after I left the Army at 23.

- Any advice or tips for people trying to get into your field?

A clearance helps; you can either do some time with the military to get one, or find a large company, like Lockheed, who gives them to interns. If you aren't willing to go through the nonsense involved in getting cleared, then the commercial sector is probably better for you.

- Advice for people who feel there to old?

Stop feeling too old and make sure to ask questions when you don't understand something.

- And what step could someone take to get ahead in the right direction

Get a dual major or dual degree in something that helps you think. I chose Pure Math for my second major, because it's logic based. Philosophy would also be good, but it'll take more time; there isn't very much overlap with Computer Science.

- What did you want to become growing up
An archaeologist
- Did you achieve it, or still pursuing it, or has you goal changed
I did try for a time, but the goal changed.
- What role are you currently in
I don't even know. I've gone from one thing to another, one skill level to another. I currently waste my brain on monotonous tasks that, though necessary, do absolutely nothing for me.
- How long did it take you to get to your position or into your career/ How old are you
Not really any time at all. Like I said, I blend wherever I go. I hope that with some effort I'll advance where I am.
- Any advice or tips for people trying to get into your field?
I won't give away where I am. I will say that perseverance is necessary.
- Advice for people who feel there to old?
*they're.....you're not, unless you think you are. Take that for what it is.
- And what step could someone take to get ahead in the right direction
Work hard. We don't have enough of that. Don't expect the world to be handed to you. Go out there and earn it.

What did you want to become growing up?
I fluctuated between Pharmacist and Registered Nurse. Ultimately, REGISTERED NURSE.

Did you achieve it, or still pursuing it, or has you goal changed
Achieved it. :)

What role are you currently in?
New Graduate Registered Nurse going into Medical Surgical Unit. (Nurses go into different specialties/units. Medical Surgical is the typical hospital floor.)

How long did it take you to get to your position or into your career? / How old are you?
3.5 years (to obtain my BSN), Hospital job (about 3 weeks after passing the Boards Exam) / 22 years old

Any advice or tips for people trying to get into your field?
Know that there are many options to get into Nursing School. You can start with community college to get started on your credits and apply to universities to transfer and (hopefully) get into their Nursing Program/School. I went straight from high school into nursing school because the route I chose was private school (very very expensive). Also, know that Nursing School is NOT meant to be partying or drinking all the time. If you like to party or not study, do not waste your time trying to pursue being a nurse. I saw many students in my VERY EXPENSIVE nursing school fail out because they never studied or thought they knew the material but really did not. Be ready to not have a life and NOT have that "college experience." Because I went straight from high school, I never experienced the "college life." Also, Nursing School has very high expectations... meaning the grading system is "somewhat" different. For example, in order to pass a course you need to average 76% or above on ONLY EXAMS before homework. Once the professor knows you scored 76% average or above only on exams (which means you passed the course)... they will add the homework points (which made very little difference). Nursing school consists of not only lecture but also actually being in hospitals and caring for patients. Ultimately, BE READY TO NOT HAVE A LIFE BUT BE READY TO SAVE A LIFE AS WELL.

Advice for people who feel there to old?
No one is ever too old to be a nurse or go back to school for that matter. I was in Nursing School (practically the youngest) and I noticed there were older folks (early/late 40s) pursuing a Bachelors in Nursing.

And what step could someone take to get ahead in the right direction?
Become a Certified Nurse Assistant or volunteer in the hospital... Just get the feel of caring for patients and helping nurses. See if nursing is the route you want to really take. If you already know you want to become a nurse, start taking the prerequisites at community colleges and look into schools with nursing programs.

I am a VERY big advocate in Nursing. It was a huge struggle, but I LOVE it. I cannot wait to actually start working on my unit.
