One of the more underrated ones is Shikabane hime. IMO one of the absolute best out there in terms of story, art, and action

Thing that immediately jumped to mind is Blood Lad.

Also, it's not anime, but a book series with a (Japanese) manga based on it, Cirque du Freak, a.k.a. The Saga of Darren Shan, by Darren Shan. (yes, he named the main character after himself, ignore that, it's still really good). The manga adaptation by Takahiro Arai is really good, too (sine this is an anime forum at all). There isn't an anime, but there should be one.
