Okay, got a few things to say here...
First, once again, people that didn't play DR2 and Another Episode will be lost on the reveal at the end of the episode.

Second, Miaya

That's all I can remember at the time, but if anything else comes back to me, I'll edit this or throw up a new post.

Cut off time for DanganRanpa 3, here we go.

NOTE: Shouldn’t need to be said but, if you are someone whose only exposure to DR is JUST the anime of the first game and you either haven’t played DR2 (and for Future, Another Episode: Despair Girls), can’t play it, or won’t play it:

Don’t watch DR3. You’ll be saving yourself a massive headache if you do.

Both Future and Despair are being made explicitly with the fans in mind (as dictated by the creators), aka people who have experienced most of the DR content in whatever media form they’ve taken. The anime is not going to stop and explain any of DR2 and Despair Girls to give you full context of their meaning in the anime. And even then, whatever explanation they do give is going to be very brief and very inadequate on delivering the full context.

Anyways, onwards and upwards.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Future

Ok, I’m just going to open right off the bat:

I REALLY never liked Future’s opening premise.

When initially promoting DR3, the production team (which apparently does consist of guys who worked on the games) saying how they wanted to make a story that wouldn’t make sense to turn into a game. And hence why they wanted to wrap up the Hope’s Peak story saga as an anime and not in a game.

And yet for Future it’s…yet another Killing Game.

Oh sure, it’s on a much more accelerated progression then the games are (as of episode 4, seemingly one character per episode getting killed off), so much so that if this anime was made into a wholesale game it’s be criminally short…And the fact that the first anime already has major pacing issues for just blazing through the events of the game at lighting speed, that’s not really saying much.

On top of all of it, Future is missing all the trappings that (to me at least) what made the Killing Games in DR1 and DR2 great.

-The likeable, sympathetic cast. In both games, we actually took the time to build up and learn about the other characters that Naegi/Hajime was stuck with. Aside from the main story we could learn more about the other characters during Free Time events, stuff that there wouldn’t be room for in the main story, or details that give further context when they do mention bits of their background.

Here in Future…we can’t do that.

Because it’s an anime that only has a 12 episode run, we can’t be given that much exploration in the new characters because the plot doesn’t allow for it. Adding any will simply drag the main story down. All we have are the returning characters from DR1.

And what we are shown…does not lead to that many favorable impressions.

Most of the characters are shown to be dicks who have no problem assuming the worst and that Naegi has defected to the Remnants of Despair, and act like assholes to anyone associated with Naegi. I mean yeah, in concept I buy the idea that the other Future Foundation members have been through hell fighting Ultimate Despair, a far more harrowing experience then the Killing School Life. But 4 episodes in we’re not really shown anything of the shit they went through. We’ve only got their word for it that things were hell and that anyone like the Remnants are not to be trusted. And aside from the basic information of what their Ultimate talent is and a couple of throwaway lines…not much else to really care about these new characters and on who lives and dies. I’m not exactly at odds with trying to pick if I should decide between Naegi or Munakata.

And any likeable new characters present that are in support of Naegi are quickly killed off. Guess which characters (as of right now) are conversely still alive? Which frankly, I always found to be a detestable and lazy trope writers use to provoke sympathy and dislike in characters in the cheapest way possible.

Yes, I know we’re only 4 episodes in and there’s a chance that later on the anime they’ll explain things And while the Despair arc is kinda sorta explaining the newer characters more (Juzo was always a dick, the reason for the broken relationship between Seiko and Ruruka), thus far it has nothing to do with the time period during the Despair Singularity (yeah, I’m not calling it by its official name. Too long and unwieldy of a name) where all the pain and horror they witnessed at the hand of the Remnants is still a ways off. So it doesn’t matter quite as much in learning why they’re dicks to Naegi.

-The murder mystery

The real meat of the previous Killing Games was the mystery to find the killer. Naegi and Hajime, with the clues they would uncover, with assistance from their classmates, and it all coming to ahead in the Classroom Trials. Which in of itself created a lot of compelling drama as well as unveiling more of the mysteries surrounding the stories of DR1 and DR2.

In Future…there is no mystery to be solved. At least none that the show is interested in showing us.

It’s just the characters killing each other and suspecting each other and not much else. And just going all in on any lingering similarities the show has with Battle Royale or Hunger Games.

And when the show DOES decide to indulge in the mystery, they don’t even want to let any of the clues be known to the audience. It’s not until episode 3 where people are like “Hey Kirigiri, you’re the Ultimate Detective aren’t you? Go do your thing and solve mysteries!!!” “Oh yeah, that’s my thing isn’t it?” And when in episode 4 when she finally gets to *a* body to investigate…the anime decides to not show us at all any insights on what she discovered, if any.

On top of this, at the end of episode 4 the show revealing who the mastermind is…but not from the result of the characters discovering on their own but from the anime just…deciding to just show us.

So based on the first four episodes in, the show isn’t interested in being a mystery. Only on all the shock value of people dying and everyone being after Naegi, even though we as the audience know full well that he’s innocent.

By choosing to be another Killing Game, the anime was doomed from the start.

It’s a format that does not lend itself well to an anime, which was evident the last time they did it, and the production team’s idea of adapting it to the medium is to cut or truncate everything that gave the Killing Game meaning until it’s…nothing by killing.

At this point I can only recommend to die-hard DR fans who have a vested interest in seeing how everything concludes. For everyone else, don’t watch Future.

DR3 Future...ok, yeah it seems like Monaca's involvement in this game isn't quite as definitive as her being the overall mastermind. Oddly.

And yeah apparently the last couple of episodes in both Future and Despair on how why they were spending a lot of time with Seiko and Ruruka...because it was leading up to this episode. Even though it's spoilers, well anyone should know DR's pattern: anytime a character that's not the MC gets a bunch of development, they're marked for death.

(although the flashbacks made Ruruka even more unlikeable to me)

My initial impression of whatever the Chairman told Kyosuke that was enough to shock him, either a.) Kyosuke is the traitor or b.) it's someone that Kyosuke personally knows and trusts...which leaves Juzo and Chisa. Juzo would be way too on the nose and Chisa...well, there has been the speculation on how Chisa isn't really dead...

Also, continuing to reinforce how Future isn't interested in being a murder mystery story...still not letting us know what clues, if any, that Kirigiri has found. Ugh.

Cross posted from the DR3 Despair thread, but via the latest episode, found some details that have allowed me to pull together my own coherent theory on who the real Attacker is in Future. And that is...

This was fantastic. I'm so overwhelmed by the amount of characters that they decided to show! Things are connecting some more.

My theory about a certain someone being the mastermind is getting more and more confirmed by the second

Real happy after watchin' this episode.
Not because of the killings, but particularly where things are heading.

With chess pieces finally on the move, I'll have to add ----

#1 Fukawa still hates baths, and
#2 Hagakure is---......... (coughs) ........

In the beginning of the episode, I was thinking, "Who is this? Did someone fake their de-Oh never mind, it's Hagakure. "
