I like both, but charcoal is cheaper in the long run. Propane is what I would use for oxy-fuel cutting and regular cooking.

Advantages to both but I prefer wood. Even pizza gets a nice smoky flavor.

Charcoal or wood/wood chips. Propane makes BBQ taste like chemicals or nail polish remover.

Plus the tanks scare me.

Charcoal is great if you have the time, just don't get the cheap stuff that's been soaked in petroleum products because all the fumes and smoke go into the food.
