I was curious if there was a Slice of life anime that was a tad more dark.
To be more specific, are there any where a girl kinda has a legitimate crappy/depressing life, then ends up meeting a guy that helps her/makes her feel better and their relationship steadily grows into a romance?

It doesn't have to be precisely like what I described, but at least similar. Any suggestions?
Thanks ~(˘▾˘~)

/say-i-love-you (I'd classify it as more in the romance genre than slice of life, but it's pretty down-to-earth and matches your description reasonably well.

I don't know if by crappy life you just mean worst or trapped behind a facade that isn't her also. If you mean the latter also then I'd add to Lorreen's absolutely perfect choice (IMHO the best slice of life anime) ...

Blue Spring Ride (Girl lives behind a phony self until she meets a guy from her past who lets her embrace the true her)
Lovely Complex (Lonely tall girl meets lonely short boy)
Black Prince and Wolf Girl (Girl lies to be cool in school and gets called on the lie)
Glasslip (Lonely girl finds the perfect life through a new guy)
In Search of the Real Future (a time-travel romance slice of life where a time-traveler is sent back to help a young man)
Orange (A letter from the past sent to a girl from her future self asks her to help save the boy they love)
Looking Up at the Half Moon (Sick girl meets boy in the hospital who refuses to let her roll over and die)

That pretty much sums up Makoto Shinkai's movie Garden of Words if you were only looking for the plot. But the animation in it is breathtaking as well. Currently only available for streaming with subscription to TAN: http://www.theanimenetwork.com/Watch-Anime/Garden-of-Words-The, but maybe with luck there will be another Global Shinkai weekend here on CR again this year.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll check them out.

But I guess what i was hoping for was more... graphic I guess? Nothing extreme, more like an abusive family or getting caught up with the wrong type of people that only end up using them/abusing them, leading up to them crossing paths with their "guardian angel" that gets them out of their shitty situation. Something with a little shock value I suppose?

I think Slice of life was a bad choice for the Genre, I think it would just be more Drama oriented, oops.

Then...

My Little Monster (Girl meets abusive boy, falls for him and tries to change him)
Golden Time (Screwed-up rich girl with her entire future planned for herself meets screwed up boy and falls for him trying to help him get right)
Maid-sama! (Rich girl's family loses everything, becomes a maid and is caught between two guys; One is a potential rapist the other a total dick screw-upwho cares about her.

On a completely out of the box note I'll include an action title having just what you ask for as well...
Gangsta (a former prostitute is saved from abuse by two toughs who run an agency working for both the cops and the mob)

These may also be in the area you're looking for.

A few others worth mentioning (though many of the mentioned ones are good):

Kotoura-San: First episode is about how no one wants to be friends with (or even family!) with a psychic. Then a guy (and friends) come along.
Clannad: The main girl is lonely and friendless because of being frail and sickly, and missing so much school. The main guy has an abusive, alcoholic father. Most other characters all have all have variously tragic backstories too.
Myself; Yourself: Childhood friends reunite after several years apart--and in between, all sorts of bad stuff has happened to all of them (particularly the main two).
ef: Tale of Memories: Again, everyone has tragic backstories here: the girls who get the guys, and the ones who don't. (Guilt, disfigurement, abandonment, etc.)
Kokoro Connect: 5 friends (2 guys, 3 girls), and all two of the girls have pretty rough backgrounds (attempted rape, abuse, etc.). (The third is more of a loner by choice.) Note: love relationships don't resolve until OVAs.
Nastuyuki Rendezvous: Love triangle between a widow, her new young assistant, and her husband who is still haunting her.

Check out Flowers of Evil, but don't expect any guardian angels to show up. It's dark, disturbing, somewhat shocking, there are abusive relationships and the "romance" is pretty messed up.

Erased might fit. He travels back in time to save an old schoolmate from being murdered and ends up intervening on her behalf to stop her parents physical abuse. Not really a romance though so if you are dead set on a romantic element this won't work.

I can think of a few where the girl saves the guy from his crappy life. Bokura Ga Ita is such a case. Yano's first love ends up dying in an accident and he can't really get over her but Nana manages to lift him up, slowly and with many mistakes along the way. There's a lot more nuances to the story than I've explained, obviously, but it's a very bittersweet series.

Saikano might align with what you're looking for as well. Certainly is dark but no one really ends up saved in the end.
