CNN)Japanese Emperor Akihito is thinking about stepping down because of his advanced age -- a move that would mark the first abdication of the nation's monarch in about 200 years -- Japanese state broadcaster NHK reported Wednesday.

Akihito, 82, believes his age prevents him from performing his duties to the fullest and that the next generation -- namely his eldest son, 56-year-old Crown Prince Naruhito -- should take them on, NHK reported, citing citing sources in the Imperial Household Agency.
The emperor, a ceremonial but revered figure in Japan's constitutional monarchy, is considering addressing the issue in a public statement, NHK reported without citing a time frame.
CNN's requests for comment from the Imperial Household Agency and the Japanese government weren't immediately answered.

Fun fact

The Era of Akihito's reign bears the name "Heisei" (平成), and according to custom he will be renamed "Emperor Heisei" (平成天皇 Heisei Tennō) by order of the Cabinet after his death.

My sheep perished when I sought to use them as food.
No wonder thou wert victorious!

I shalt abdicate.

But I thought Naruhito had escaped from the palace, and was hiding out as a wandering minstrel...

Charles: Have you heard mum? The Japanese Emperor abdicated because he felt his age was preventing him from fulfilling his duties as monarch. Makes you think he might be on to something.

Elizabeth: You're absolutely right, Charles. Perhaps I should follow suit.

Charles:

Elizabeth: Go get William. We should discuss his coronation immediately.

Charles: GODDAMNIT!!!

japan is going through some interesting changes lately. First the election where for the first time 18 and 19 years old voted for the first time. Then there's plenty of talk of japanese monarchy system being outdated and thoughts of turning to aproach a different system like other natios have and now this, i hope the changes are for better than for worse.
