I like to trade off the shows I watch, I usually keep about three but I only have two now and they're both kinda peaceful in a way (Rourouni Kenshin does have fighting but a lot of it is about peace and slice of life and it's mostly kinda laidback despite the darker moments, plus I've already watched it before), so I'm looking for a third that's more intense and I haven't seen yet.
I want a show that has fighting that isn't blinding from flashing and that can pose real danger to the characters (bonus if someone actually dies), that has real tension and emotion between the characters and moral uncertainty in their actions, lastly I don't want it to be cliché (even if the action and drama are good, some things just kinda ruin it). I don't know though, maybe I've pretty much picked crunchyroll clean on this, I've watched a lot.
I might be willing to sacrifice a couple points if it's good on other ones.
Any thoughts?

How do you feel about Mecha? There's a title that has pretty much everything you ask for here (if you haven't seen it that is)...Valvrave the Liberator. It deals just as much with the characters on a human level as on a fighting level (possibly even a little more). It has questionable morality, dark acts, character death, character tension etc. The best part is it's very far from cliche.

Have you seen Btooom!? This might fit what you're looking for but I'm not entirely sure on this one.

Seconding Valvrave - it's amazing. I love it to bits. The characters are so great!
Also, K. It also has great characters and a great plot, with lots of drama. Few deaths, but the ones there are are heavy, emotionally.

Valvrave is on Crunchy. K is on Hulu and Netflix. (make sure to watch the movie for K between seasons 1 and 2 - it's listed separately, though).

Rose of Versailles
Madoka Magica
Gatchaman Crowds
Akagi (looks like you've seen it!)
Cardcaptor Sakura
Galaxy Express 999
Black Jack
Young Black Jack
Aldnoah.Zero
Suisei no Gargantia
Gundam Unicorn (it's a good idea to watch the preceding Universal Century Gundam series first)

not available on CR:
Kino no Tabi
Fullmetal Alchemist (and 'Brotherhood', which is a remake and I believe is coming to CR. Some suggest skipping the original.)

I've liked some Mecha shows and wow that sounds amazing! Definitely gonna check it out, found it, thanks. ^.^
Yea, I was looking at Btooom! at one point but after seeing Gate and not being impressed I was kinda worried it might be similar so I haven't looked at it yet...

You're very welcome . Btooom! is nothing at all like Gate. Gate is mostly family-friendly and honestly "Btooom!" is far from it. It can get extemely dark at times.

Someone already said it, but Hunter X Hunter is sooo good you'll love it.
It seems like a childish show at first, but it's hard to find anything more thrilling than the arcs that go down later into the show, you'll be so afraid that characters are going to die. Plus a big point of conflict becomes the drama between the main characters

hope this helps!
