So yeah... um... I started watching Anime last summer, (2015) and I know I've watched no where near as much as some people, but I've definitely seen a fair amount. The thing is, I never used My Anime List, and I'd like to have a list to keep track, but putting everything on there would take so long... uhggggg.
I actually kept a list of a decent portion of what I've watched on a notepad file, but even that would take a while to transfer over to MAL. Plus I'd have to remember all the ones I've never written down.

What do you guys think, should I make one, or is it not worth the effort?

I used to think that. I had been watching anime for over 10 years and I felt like it would be a pain in the ass to get it all down but one day I was bored and decided to just make one and I quickly realized it's not that bad. You don't have to list them all down at once, you can do it over days or weeks like I did. Overall I'm glad I did sign up because it helped me find anime that were similar to what I've watched better than anything else I've tried has.

I've moved this to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum.

I also don't use MAL for keeping a list, and while others can speak to some of the features on that site might make it worthwhile, if the only thing you want is a place to maintain your list that is shareable with others, there are other places.

I keep my list at ANN (www.animenewsnetwork.com). I found it easier to start my list there because they have a way where you can go through a list of shows alphabetically and check off a bunch all at once to add to your "seen some" and "seen all" lists..It's also pretty easy to move multiple items from one list to another (e.g. from "currently watching" to "finished") or to copy items from one list to another (even though the comments you might have added don't get copied -- they only transfer when you move.) I don't know what MAL has by way of creating custom lists, but ANN is pretty good with this. You can basically create any categories you want to organize your shows into.

It's really not that hard. I like Myanimelist because it's fairly easy to keep track of what you're watching or have watched. You can list things as watching, plan to watch, completed, on hold or dropped so you can see the anime's you didn't finish or didn't enjoy as well as the one's you've completed or are watching. The ONLY gripe I have with MAL is they are extreme purists meaning that they ONLY list Japanese anime and not other shows that I personally would consider anime like RWBY but that's not really a biggie. It's also nice because you can see how many episodes are in a season if you watch simulcasts. The best thing to do is just click on shows as you watch them and keep track as you go. It only gets annoying if I've been lazy and haven't been keeping track of the shows I've watched, then I have to go back and find them all. Using MAL is just a lot easier than writing it all down on your pc or in a notebook somewhere plus you can grade the shows from 1-10 and it's also a good tool to use to find really good shows. A lot of the more popular shows with higher ratings have those ratings for a reason. I steer clear of all the Naruto's or Bleach type shows though and just concentrate on all the rest. I found Steins Gate, Your Lie in April, Code Geass and Monogatari that way.

There's also Hummingbird which is newer and has a slick modern interface.

Should check it out, I added almost all the anime I've watched on my MAL, though I'm still missing some. Like some specific hentai that I can't for the life of me remember the names I'm close to finishing 300 anime, and I personally can't wait for that milestone
