All actions can, through the proper context, be viewed as a struggle of ends vs means. Even the simple act of eating can be fraught with concern as even strict vegans may not live up the standards of a Jainist monk.

Does this mean that we should be bogged down with ethical debates over every action? No. We should, and have, developed as a society a system of things that are not to be done. Things like murder, theft, kidnapping, etc. Beyond that it should be up to personal choice and decision in a free society.

Justified, no. Necessary, maybe. Those are two different things in my mind.
