Wat is this? Some illegal power seizure attempt?

New Ottoman Empire? Wut.

There's been reports of gunfire, the military is blocking off bridges across the Bosphorus, and the Prime Minister of Turkey is even saying that there's an attempt by the military to overthrow his government. We'll probably know a bit more of the details once the situation cools down.

Though I should point out that this isn't anything new for Turkey. The military is traditionally considered the guardians of the secular Republic of Turkey as envisioned and created by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. This isn't the first time they've attempted (and in most cases succeeded) to overthrow the government when they think the guys in charge are shitting on the Republic, and by extension Ataturk's legacy.

. It's already that bad? I mean it was kind of clear that something like this would happen but I thought maybe in a few years and when Erdogan is in a weaker position. Or at least that's what I was hoping for.
This could have a really, really bad ending.

Turkey actually has a history of this.

The Turkish military sees itself as the protector of the state and has previously gone after governments they decide get too far from Atatürk's vision of the Turkish state. Its historically sort of complicated in ways you don't normally associate with the words "military coup" in popular vision.

I wouldn't have such a big problem with it when I would think that there's a chance that they can overthrow the government (I'm not a big Erdogan fan). But in the current situation I think that it will only make him stronger. He still has the support of the people and he's safe right now. He will just use it as a reason to make himself even more powerful.

Apparently the military has stated it is in control of the country (not sure how far reaching that control actually is) and have declared a state of martial law over State TV.

We're only halfway through 2016 and its well on its way to becoming "the year where everything stopped making sense"..

This is more amusing than a movie.
This is so interesting...

And to walker:

For those of you who don't know, Erdogan is basically an authoritarian dictator who has been trying to give himself more power through constitutional changes. He's locked up those who speak out against him and cracked down on freedom of the press. Not to mention he's an outright Islamic conservative who's trying to drag secular Turkey back into the 19th century.
