What was the stated reason (the one politicians gave) for raising it? (It's often interesting to hear their reasoning)

I'll give you the lowdown ,no single politician gave support to rising it or keeping it at 14. Special interest groups have always ruled politics, Canada is a joke politically and legally speaking.

Here is Michigan it's 16, which surprised me. I had always assumed 18.

There's a caveat there. While the age of consent is 16 in almost 2/3 of the United States, it's FEDERALLY still 18. Which means if either of you crosses state lines, the age of consent is 18.

And both mobile phones and internet usage are legally considered crossing state lines, even if they don't. You can pull out your mobile and text the girl down the street, connecting to cell towers just a couple miles from you, all of it staying in the same state... and by FCC regulations, it falls under interstate commerce rules. Which means if you text some dirty message to a high school girl, you can go to prison. If you call her on your land line and say something dirty, that's fine, but Skype is off limits.

Also, we've pretty solidly established that if someone lies to you, we only care about the lowest age. If a 16 year old lies to you and claims to be 19, you'll be prosecuted as though you hooked up with a 16 year old. But if a 19 year old lies and claims to be 16... you'll be prosecuted as though you hooked up with a 16 year old.

Which you can still totally do, if you walk out of the house and down the street without using a mobile device or the internet, in 32 states.

But once mobile and internet get involved, it's prison and sex offender registries for you.
