Exactly this! I think they are getting slightly better on some shows but really hope they start uploading their episodes on time like CR.

In general though, I find the Funimation streams to be dramatically lower resolution than that of Crunchyroll, and they put those black bars on as well.

I've never seen any black bars on FUNi's service using any apps or the site (unless they are intentionally a part of the show like Ninja Slayer). What app are you streaming from and seeing black bars, also what show and episode? Can you post a screencap?

The low resolution thing is normal when a stream first starts up. It auto adjusts to HD in a few seconds once it has buffered if your internet service can handle HD streams. I notice it with both CR and FUNi on certain apps.

That's interesting. So, I take it this is from the UK's beta FUNimationNOW website player?

In the USA, the website is still the old one and those black bars are not there on the same video.

Here's a screencap from the FUNimation website in the USA:

This one is from the FUNimationNOW Android app in the USA:

This one is from the FUNimationNOW Windows 10 app in the USA:

No black bars here on the FUNimationNOW apps or the old site which is the only option in the USA currently. Have you tried playing the same video on any of the apps besides the web player? If so, do you see black bars on those as well?

I've been hearing about the rebranding of their streaming service for the past couple of months now but haven't seen any difference whether it's through my tablet or on my PS4 other than seeing their new "funimation Now" visual before the start of an episode.

Nothing changed with the PS4 app yet to my knowledge, it should still be the old one. FUNi did replace the mobile apps with FUNiNow ones, though. How long ago did you install the app on your tablet? The FUNimationNow app has been out for several months now. Have you downloaded the new app on your tablet?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Funimation.FunimationNow

The old one was called "FUNimation Free" for the non paid version or just "FUNimation" for the paid version. The new one is called "FunimationNow" and I had to download it separately from the old free one (it was not just an update to the old one but a new app entirely).

I actually downloaded the app for my tablet sometime in May which did show the "Funimation Now" logo and while the interface is different, I haven't noticed anything significantly different.

There are two things about Funi's new app that irritate me. First is that the menu screens are stuck in landscape orientation, even when my tablet is set for portrait orientation. I like viewing everything other than a currently playing video in portrait orientation.

Second is the app can't seem to remember that I have an account and was logged in. Almost every single time I open the app, it makes me sign in again. None of the other apps I use make me do that (e.g., CR, Netflix, any of the Amazon apps). Netflix will have me resign in, but the instances are months apart. Not potentially multiple times a day like with Funi.

There are some basic and common app functionalities that Funi's app just doesn't have.

Also, they're really slow about updating, so I watch shows on the browser site half the time anyways.
Though must say it's nice that the browser player works on a tablet.

Interestingly, the android app on my phone is stuck in portrait orientation (the height being bigger than the width) while my tablet is stuck in landscape orientation, haha. I agree, being able to rotate the app's screen orientation should be added in future builds.

I've not experienced any account log outs on either my tablet or phone. Every time I've opened the app thus far it has kept my session logged in. Maybe it is some setting with your tablet causing it instead? If not, perhaps you should try uninstalling and then reinstalling the app to see if that fixes this issue?

The browser player being HTML-5 and not flash based is a godsend since it allows for playback on mobile devices. CR really needs to switch to HTML-5. I agree they need to be better at getting shows up in a more timely fashion like CR typically is able, though. FUNi usually is slowest in this regard when a new season starts for whatever reason.

Ah, that's why you have not seen any big difference. There has been no significant changes to the FUNimationNOW app, at least as far as I'm aware, besides bug fixes and maybe a GUI facelift since May. I think the OP is talking more about FUNimation transitioning the app from the old "FUNimation Free" app to the "FUNimationNOW" app, which happened back in March. Based on you downloading it in May, it seems you never experienced the old "Free" app and just the new "NOW" app, since the Free app was discontinued when the NOW one came out back in March.

You can see a timeline for all the news for the apps here:

Funi's streaming sucks, and will continue to suck for the rest of time. Their subs suck, their timing sucks, their placement sucks, and their overall presentation sucks.

In view of reading numerous comments such as this when trying to troubleshoot...

I'm enjoying Funimation now via an Amazon firestick to watch Fairy Tail
(in the UK only episodes after 175 (they call it "season two") are available on Crunchyroll and I like the Dubbed voices in any case);
Funimation now has all of them dubbed or subbed

I am however having big issues with buffering. Or at least I assume that's the problem - the playback will randomly stop, then return after some seconds but often with audio out of sync. Sometimes the audio will loop a few seconds too, and the video may pause while it does, often returning out of sync

I've a 200mbps virgin cable internet connection so I'd have thought this more than fast enough even via WiFi to avoid buffering; I've noticed the same behaviour on my wired PC connection at times with Funimation now.

I thought this discussion was the best place to ask others if this experience is usual or common among Funimation Now users or if I need to explore hardware issues or even a new device

I was considering trying a Roku stick rather than a Fire stick for example, or otherwise pay up for a wired box version of either but would be helpful to know if this would truly make a difference before shelling out the cash

I had the opposite. CR's player works for me fine except occasionally on my phone but Funimation continuously screws up like with the latest Tales of Zestiria episode.

Does the Funimation app have a free trial or do you have to pay straightway. I have seen the app in the store but there are no details other then subscribing listed in the Amazon Fire TV description.

So got home and decided to check out the Funimation app, easy sign up process, although no PayPal so had to use my credit card which I don't like doing and I never use my debit card on line.

The app works quite well, will need to see if there is a Android TV app for my Nexus Player but at least the mobile app has Chromecast functionality. Very impressed with the selection of shows that have dubs, for some reason I have no problem with subs for movies but find my self too lazy to use subs for Anime.

Am I likely to get all the Anime shows I want to see between Crunchyroll and Funimation?

If you are in the US or Canada, for recent shows, yes. Every season there are a couple that show up elsewhere and are not on CR or Funi, but most have been on Crunchy or Funi for the last few seasons.

Of course, that could change--if Netflix and Amazon decide to acquire more new shows, then that could mean less for Funi and Crunchy.

I am in the UK, just started with the Anime addiction I also have a Amazon and Netflix account as well. Now just trying to work out which paid Anime service to use. Crunchys selection appears to be better and had a better pricing structure.

Just tried chromcasting to my Nexus player for the Funimation app and while you get the stream to play it pretty much crashes the app on my phone. No lock screen controls and the actual app stops responding.

Following this I've switched from the wifi Firestick to a Fire TV box with wired Ethernet.

I'm happy to say it's sorted all my buffering/pausing/audio desyncing issues; the Funimation Now streams play great now.
