Why are people saying they should let Sonic die when Nintendo still brings out almost nothing but Mario games? well Mario and Zelda and Pokemon.

and Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem, and Yoshi, and Smash Brothers, and Pikmin, and Metroid...

The reason why Sonic has had such a bad feedback is mostly that the series had gone downhill from the moment "Sonic Adventure" came out. You'll notice that most people get somewhat hyped for the 2D versions of Sonic while anything 3D is almost instantly met with resistance and disappointment. This is because Sonic never migrated to 3D in a way that resonates with its original audience. Then you have the generation of gamers who started with Sonic Adventure (and adore it) - who feel that some of the 3D games were lacking but the series still has a strong backing.

When it comes down to it, Sonic was a good series. I'll probably get Sonic Mania because the girlfriend is a "Sonic over Mario" gamer (and these are the only kinds of games she really plays). Personally, I'll give it a good run and see if it keeps my interest at all.

^yeah add all those to the list of played out series lol at acting like Yoshi and smash brothers is different to Mario. I like Fire Emblem.

Well i was a Sega man for a long time. And i can actually admit that it went down hill since Sonic Cd on the Sega Saturn.
I grew up with Sega. I loved Sonic 1,2 and 3 (Sonic and Knuckles as well if that wasn't one of them i forget?).
I got Sonic CD on my Saturn and i got Sonic Adventure on my Dreamcast and have not played a Sonic game since.
But that dose not mean that i think Sonic should be put to rest.

If Crash Badicoot can come back and if Mario will never die then i dont see why Sonic cant live on.

Well, Yoshi is a different IP and focuses on a slightly different demographic. Smash Bros is a totally different realm altogether (fighting games from Nintendo isn't all that common, outside of Smash Bros).

It does boil down to generations of gamers, though. People like you and I are used to Sonic of the Genesis Era - we loved the level design, the background music, the fast moving hedgehog that your eyes will keep spinning around with until they're dizzy. The problem stems from those who prefer the 3D model and those who prefer the 2D model. Because SEGA keeps bouncing back and forth to try to please both demographics - it's getting burned out a lot faster than Mario or Crash. If you look just at the action/platformer games:

Mario: 8
Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
New Super Mario Bros (2009)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)
Super Mario 3D Land (2011)
New Super Mario Bros 2 (2012)
New Super Mario Bros: U (2013)
New Super Luigi: U (2013)
Super Mario Odyssey (2017)

Sonic: 14
Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007)
Sonic Rivals 2 (2007)
Sonic Unleashed (2008)
Sonic & The Black Knight (2009)
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (2010)
Sonic Colors (2010)
Sonic Generations (2011)
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 (2012)
Sonic Lost World (2013)
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (2014)
Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (2014)
Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice (2016)
Sonic Mania (2017)
Sonic Force (2017/2018)

That's not including the partnerships (Mario and Sonic Olympics) or other types of games (Racing Games like Mario Kart/All-Star Sega Racing or RPGs like Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood or Paper Mario). I kept to a decade's timeframe just because some of the current gamers are only hitting their late teens/early 20's.

The issue for Sonic is that SEGA has oversaturated the market and has some really horrible games out using the Sonic IP. Nintendo has done the same, but they keep everything in-house and on their own systems (so it doesn't appear as "in your face" as seeing the same Sonic game three times in one trip to the store - PS4, XB1, Wii-U). It's a marketing thing. I know SEGA needs as much cash flow as possible but overexposure causes a "meh" reaction to your product.

This is the same reason why Sony and Microsoft fight for even 1-3 months "exclusive" access to a game. They can market it as the first one to have it, the only one to have it for <insert time here>. Sure, it'll come out on the other console - but by that time, the image of that game has been burned into the minds of gamers as "for PS4" or "for Xbox One".

I'm not saying that Sonic is forever tarnished, just that SEGA needs to focus on one strong line-up of Sonic games. Sonic Mania is a fan-designed/coded game that they've backed, so I understand that. Sonic Forces being announced at the same time gives an odd feel to some players that are anti-3D Sonic (in the sense that Sonic Mania is just being thrown in as an "afterthought" even though it wasn't actually SEGA making it).

^Dam you know your shit when it comes to Sonic (and Mario) more than me.
Yeah the 3D Sonic games seem to lose the speed aspect of the 2D games. But i guess 2D comes across as outdated.
And i know Sonic tried to branch out. I didn't mind Sonic adventure if memory serves.
I guess i grew out of those sort of games anyway.
Would be interesting to play one again though sometime.

As a long-term (usually quiet) Sonic fan I've seen a lot of good games and a lot of broken hopes. I've also enjoyed some titles held in disdain by other long-term fans I know in spite of myself. Case in point: Shadow the Hedgehog. Better choices could had been made in practically every aspect but somehow it managed to be fun in a B-movie sort of way.

Mania looks amazing. Of course I was also hyped for Sonic 4 before gameplay videos and the demo. It looks like a true sequel in the spirit of the older generations. Plus the preorder was insane in a good way but I've been burned on preorders before (Fable II).

Forces... it has potential. I was wary of Generations and it turned out to be a good game. Why not this? I am frustrated by how they repeated a species when they could had given you, say, a reptilian one instead. I can understand why there's no Echidnas but really? Bear, Bird, Cat, Dog, Hedgehog, Rabbit, and then Wolf? If you're gonna put another canid you could pick a vulpine instead of a second canine.
On another note does anyone get an impression of Neo Metal Sonic, Mephiles the Dark (who in turn pilfered from Shadow the Hedgehog), and Rogue the Bat in the new villain character's design choices?

MrAnimeSK I don't suppose you ever took Freedom Planet for a spin? Its not Sonic but if you want Sonic its a good Not!Sonic that feels somewhat like Sonic's indie reincarnation.

Nar never played that one. I should mix it up a bit. For a long long time i've played pretty much nothing but rpg's and fps games. The the odd exeptions.

The demo still exists. If I remember correctly it lets you do the Time Attack "hit the targets" mode as well as the first level of the game's main mode. There's also Spark the Electric Jester which feels like Sonic with a powers system like Kirby. It has very good play owing to the fact that the dev made extremely good Sonic fangames before Spark but I just can't stand the main character.
