Hi guys, just a quick question here.

I've just started watching S.A.O and I'm loving it so far even though I'm only up to episode 3. One thing that is bugging me however is the floors system within the game.

As I understood it you have 100 floors each with their own towns and dungeons. With a floor boss that must be defeated in order to progress to the next floor. If this is true then what is that huge pillar/column that is shown in nearly every establishing shot, is that where all the floor bosses are? If so why do people have trouble finding them? Also, Kirito seems to be able to hop all over different floors, eg. In one scene he's on floor 28 and in the next he's suddenly on floor 49 for Christmas. Is this just a long passage of time? Or has he previously completed these floors and is teleporting between them?

Wow sorry this turned into many questions ... if it is something I need to keep watching for and it will be explained please let me know, it just felt like something I was missing..

Obviously no spoilers please if you can.

Thanks.

The first few episodes are only the intro and a few side stories, and then the real story starts after 2 years so there's going to be a lot of time skips early on.

Each floor is like it's own mini world that contains a maze like dungeon where the floor boss can be found. There are floors with towns that people can live in.

The way I understood the 'tower' is that is in someway metaphoric. Sort of like you can see it but it wont be anctual place until you have found and defeated the boss. And even then, it still doesn't function as a tower, as a person doesn't necessarily have to do any climbing in the inside space, just cross what used to be the boss room and exit. Though no doubt they can transport much more directly to any city on any previous level they have been in.

Each floor has a large town (with the portal for that floor), some number of smaller villages, side dungeons, questing areas, etc. Each floor has its own theme, which determines the scenery, climate, and monsters you'll see on that level: glaciers, flowers, insects, undead, lakes, forest, etc.

The big tower in the middle is the main "dungeon" they always refer to.

There are only two ways to go from one floor to another:
1) Walk up the staircase in the big tower. This requires searching out that particular level of the big tower in the middle, finding the boss room for that level, killing the boss, and walking up the staircase that the boss protects.

OR

2) Taking a portal from the big town on one level to the big town on another level. This can ONLY be done after the portal on a higher floor has been activated--in other words, someone (anyone) has to do it the hard way, after which everyone else can do it the easy way.

Like every episode in the anime takes place months apart from the previous episode. This is basically due to how SAO was originally written.

The first novel of SAO covers pretty much episodes 1 and then 8 through 14. Episodes 2 through 7 were events that took place during the second novel. There is a 2 year timeskip between episode 1 and 8. 8 through 14 are pretty much one after another when it comes to timeline though.

As far as episode 3 goes, the second part of episode 3 takes place like 5 months after the first part of episode 3, and thats why there is the huge floor jump, because there is a big time skip.

I am guessing though that the inside of the pillars are mazes, so they arent straight forward and it takes some time to find out how to get through them.

Yep

"If so why do people have trouble finding them?"

Because there's a lot of monsters that populate the maze within those pillars and you have to find your way through the maze.

"Also, Kirito seems to be able to hop all over different floors, eg. In one scene he's on floor 28 and in the next he's suddenly on floor 49 for Christmas. Is this just a long passage of time? Or has he previously completed these floors and is teleporting between them?"

It's both. As stated already, the first season has only a few floors represented as episodes. Then as already stated, once you clear a floor boss, you get the honor of activating the gate allowing teleportation to that level, which opens up that level to other players without having to go on a long hike to get to the next floor.

Watch both seasons, then make your own decision about it. There's a lot of episodes that stand out with lots of feelz. It's too bad the anime can't make room for all the stuff in the light novels.
