First off, this is not meant to be a dub-bashing thread. Or complaining about bad dubs in general. Or anything like that. Please, please keep it on topic.

That having been said...

Last night, I had the dub of Naruto Shippuden on in the background on Toonami while I was doing other things, and one of my pet peeves of the Naruto dub happened to come up:

"Kunai knife".

The Naruto dub always says "kunai knife", and that always irritates me. That's like saying "rifle gun" or "grenade bomb". And that got me to wondering: what other minor, annoying little gripes do other anime fans have about otherwise decent dubs? Just...little things that bug you.

Here, I'll offer up another one: The dub of Inuyasha's final arc, where they kept using the word "defile" in the most bizarre context. It got....really annoying after a while, especially when there are so many other words that could have been used and would have been less WTF-inducing.

The worst part of me are the voice actors, they are always horrible. I think I have only seen one anime that I didn't hate 90% of the voices.

The thing that annoys me most in translations is when they take some cultural item or creature and replace it with something that is inappropriate for the context. The best example is actually from the Ao no Exorcist manga where they substituted munchkin for zashikiwarashi. It's like they didn't even try.

An anime example would be callin rice balls donuts in the Pokemon dub. Though that one just makes me laugh now. I remember watching it as a kid and thinking 'what is wrong with you people? those aren't donuts'.

I personally prefer dubs for the majority of anime (although for most newer stuff I end up watching subs because I'm so impatient) but I do find it kind of weird when a dub tries to translate Japanese honorifics in ways that don't make sense. Like, in the Rurouni Kenshin dub how Megumi always calls him 'Sir Ken' - of course this is the same dub that had been known to call a katana a 'Japanese sword', sooooo...

For anime that are set in Japan, I personally have no problem with just keeping honorifics in a dub - like with Bamboo Blade it always felt kind of weird when MiyaMiya would say Donny (even though that's a pretty reasonably equivalent) instead of Dan-kun because I kind of imagined Donny as being the kind of thing Carrie would call him.

The annoying thing of listening to to a sub in japanese (don't really watch dubs anymore) and you hear random phrases in english from a character that isn't a tourist. Using ones like "Thank you!" or "Okay!" in the middle of a japanese conversation seems sort of normal, but when a character asks another "Hey man, what have you been up to lately? I couldn't get hold of you." (this being in the normal language that you can hear) and the character responds in English "I have been busy!".

Its like . A character throwing an english sentence in the middle of a conversation and nobody can understand you....

Now see, this is the kind of thing that is the exact opposite of what I made this thread for. Again, this is not meant to be a dub-bashing thread! And what you just did is, well, dub-bashing. Go stand out in the hallway with these buckets of water and think about your navel.

One old pet peeve of mine that is a lot less common in modern dubs (thank goodness) is the actors talking incredibly fast, and usually without pauses, to keep up with the lip movements (see: Speed Racer, among many others). It sounds hilariously unnatural.

This is more of an old school one but when the censor stuff with really bad bikinis added to the scene like in the broadcast version of Tenchi Muyo some characters have bright blue bikinis on or worse orange. I understand the purpose but it just looks so unnatural to me.

a monotone scream or when they are supposed to be angry it sounds really monotone. That and how they pronounce names of certain things..... Hope that doesn't sound like I'm bashing on dubs.

I dislike when they try to make a character more edgy than in the subs. For example I HATE the dub to High School DxD for that very reason. The show is ecchi enough without the dubs going overboard. Fortunately the subs are good enough that if you removed a decent amount of the ecchi material than it was still a good stand alone story. Minor spoiler under the spoiler tag.

Retention of completely unnecessary Japanese words.

Translation is only part of the localization process but sometime dubs (manga translations as well) seem to forget this and fail to completely transition dialogue into natural English.
THIS INCLUDES HONORIFICS!

Don't get me started on leaving in shit like baka and keikaku...

One that irritates me (probably more than it should) is onee-sama -> sissy.

I simply can't watch the Railgun dub because of this and I love Railgun (and dubs).
