It could just be that he prefers horror anime to other genres. There's nothing wrong with that. I hate reverse-harems and yaoi, my brother loves reverse-harems and the girl I'm dating loves yaoi. Different strokes for different folks. You try suggesting something like Higurashi or Another? Maybe they're more in line with his likes? Oh, and for the record I think bad taste is a myth perpetrated by Hollywood Movie Critics and Oscar Voters .

I'd love to recommend him something else, but he's pretty much stuck with Mirrai nikki refusing to watch anything else

Do you have access to Hulu?

Show him this clip of Umineko and I'm sure he may be interested in trying out a new favorite ...

While I don't think Future Diary is all that good I can't say he necessarily has bad tastes, it all comes down to opinions in the end. I do believe he could watch things far better but eh. Also, you might be a huge problem to why he dislikes it, always consider that. It's like when you hype yourself up for a video game claiming it'll be a legend and GOTY and your expectations become so high that every little thing that turns out differently than you had hoped ends up disappointing you greatly. You should recommend things without hyping them too much and you shouldn't assume just because it's your favorites that he has to enjoy it just as much or his taste is trash.

Joking aside, what actually constitutes as terrible for you?

I don't think I've personally watched much that had nothing of merit. Even when it's something I deserted or dropped, I can usually still rationalize a reason why someone else would like it.

Umineko, really?x) I mean, the anime is pretty much all over the place with a half assed mystery and under-developed characters. As a Umineko Visual novel reader, I'm not sure I'd recommend the anime to anyone.
But hey, what do I know, this might just be right up his alley

Yeah, It's kind of a evil circle. If I don't hype it up enough, he wont bother watching it. However, if I hype it up too much, he expects too much.

Everything is very subjective, but when you know that your friend likes something that you know it's not so good and you have plenty of better options to recommend, you start to wonder if your friend truly has bad taste or not, but in the end you can't help it if your friend also considers that some of your shows are bad, you just have to accept different opinions. And of course, if you're going to recommend something don't hype it because it will ruin your experience, it happened to me very recently.

The moments that I really hate is when they can't appreciate something that is incredibly good and that deserves all their popularity like Hunter x Hunter and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but again, everything is subjective. That doesn't make it easier to tolerate their hate towards a masterpiece, you'll just have to live and deal with those opinions however you want.

Everyone has a base or a ground of common things to like or dislike, sometimes you just need to show them how to like it or spice it to their taste.
shiit... too spicey?

If my guess is correct (a way out there one), maybe he has a thing for Yanderes . It wouldn't surprise me lol . Maria and Beatrice are two of the most out there Yandere in anime . I still have to pick-up the VN but absolutely loooooved the manga.

It's not like I made this thread to deny the fact that opinions are subjective. As bad as it seems, even I'm aware that opinions are subjective, it's common sence.

It's just like you said, really frustrating when a good friend finds your favorite stuff shitty.
