After watching the new Netflix version of Voltron: Legendary Defender, I decided that I really wanted a couple of the Paladin Bayards. I started off with Keith's, since I tend to make a lot of sword-type props.
![]() To make it, I traced out vectors in Inkscape from a screenshot in the show. Basically: ![]() From there, I took it into 123D Design, extruded the shapes, rounded and shaped, and got to: ![]() After that, most of the smaller parts were 3D printed, while the blade was carved on a CNC. And voila! One Bayard. Next up is Pidge's. For more pictures of the work in progress, check out http://imgur.com/a/XPHdO, and if you would like to make your own, it's available on request. EDIT - sorry for removing the Thingiverse link, but someone was selling prints of what looked like my files on Etsy, something I really didn't want to happen. Can't be 100% sure, of course, but they included some details that I added, not from the show, so.. fairly clear. If anyone is interested in the files for Keith's Bayard, just PM me instead. |

Thanks! Let's see here.. Software (all free) Inkscape - where I bring in the source image and draw out all the vector art on top. 123D Design - for bringing the vectors into 3D, round edges, and export into a format the printers like. Hardware ROBO 3D R1+ - 3D Printer, probably the best price for print volume I've seen. PLA printer filament - color doesn't really matter, since everything gets painted, usually about $20 per spool. Airbrush with paint Unfortunately, I can't link to the CNC I used, because I built & programmed it from scratch. I know there are several models out there, but I don't know enough about them to recommend one or another. If you're in an area with a maker space, they likely have one available for use, though! |

And there, a version of Pidge's to make a matched "blade-style" set:
![]() ![]() I based this one heavily on Keith's, since the grip and rear portions would remain the same. Ended up making the front "blade" out of glow-in-the-dark plastic, which I need to get a good picture of.. once it gets dark, that is. (EDIT - removed Thingiverse link, as stated in the opening post) |
