What the fuck? I'm not going to pretend like I'm some kind of manga expert or anything, but how the hell was this the worst manga of the year? I mean it certainly wasn't terrible, but I thought it was a pretty decent manga, at worst it was average. Looking at the reviews it seems critics agree with me on this one too so how the hell did this happen?

It's codename for "worst one they read"/"One they just disliked the most for reason that probably wasn't pertinent to the base quality".

The list seems reasonably legitimate if they got Yotsuba&! on there.

Never heard of Black Clover. What about it did they think was so awful that it would warrant this vote? I'm looking it up now and it seems like just another mainstream Shonen Jump series so far.

I just know it gets some hate/called a rip off from people because of numerous Naruto similarities (elements from the plot). Series has a lot of potential and it definitely doesn't deserve worst manga lol

It pretty much is. Not fantastic but not bad either. I've been trying to look up some justification for this choice but I can't find any so if you can I would be happy to know about it. I honestly don't know what they could hate about it so much other than just the fact that its somewhat derivative.

Well I need some manga to read for the road trip I'm about to go on anyway. I'll see for myself whether this vote holds water, but the only way I can see this being any worse then just "generic" would be if the author pulls a Fairy Tail and removes all dramatic tension from the story.

The manga is becoming quite the hit in japan.

The theme "Never giving up that your efforts will be rewarded" is so popular with young people especially Japan.

I believe Black Clover is quite popular with the newer readers of WSJ so they don't care about it using tropes(not that naruto , OP , Bleach or any other B Shounen doesn't use tropes)

I very much like Asta more than Deku since he actually worked hard towards his dream while Deku just sat back and daydreamed until he got AfO.

After reading the first few chapters, Black Clover really just seemed like a cheap knock off of Naruto. In the same sense that Natsu in Fairy Tail is basically just a concentration of what the author thought was popular about Luffy from One Piece. The initial impression I got from Black Clover was that the author tried to make a manga using just the elements that he thought won Naruto its popularity. Needless to say, I was bored, and dropped it quickly.

So basically, if you've seen Naruto, Fairy Tail, or One Piece... there is a good chance that you will roll your eyes at Black Clover and say "Not this shit again."

Mangaka more than likely heavily inspired by kishimotos work.. not necessarily just trying to score the same success by ripping it off

Well, Black Clover isn't a good manga, but it's not 1/10 terrible either. At its best it's just decent and follows the shonen tropes and guidelines, even if it does seem cookie-cutter at times.

as soon as I saw Bleach on the Under-rated but Great Manga list
I immediately stop finding this a legtimate source.
Granted I havn't read Black Cover but I will now can't be worse than Holy Knight or SAO and it can't have worse art than FLCL or HXH manga.
And after reading the insulting abomination of hell known as Drag-On Dragoon Shi ni Itaru Aka which was the last manga I read this may be a nice surprise.

Edit - First issue of Black Clover and it;'s fucking Naruto. No wonder it's considered worst manga.

Edit 2 - Ok so it's actually better than Naruto it's typical shonen but so far not too bad. Don't see why they listed it as worst.

Black Clover is much lighter and easier to swallow than Naruto,

Less angst(Sasuke) and also no irritating female character(Sakura)

I didn't mind the angst or Sasuke it was everything else the irritated me.
Like the Dues Ex Machina no jutsu and Sakura and Naruto and epsecially the crybabies who want to force the author to make a alternate timeline were Sakura and Naruto get married. Plus the absolute stupidity that followed Pain and like the final ninja war that took like 2 years to finish.

Omfg I thought the hxh you were talking about was hunter x hunter. It occurs to me now that youre likely talking about that piece of shit that just got a shitty anime adaptation this season. Haha

I liked Naruto a lot back when it was new but even as a kid I knew the first volume or so was pretty lame. It was definitely below average in terms of art, the powers were not particularly interesting and the fights (the whole appeal of this genre) were under-developped and unmemorable. While I feel that last one is true for Black Clover so far, I find the art looks great with very expressive character faces and well detailed framing and locations. And the powers are great too. You still get your ubertypical fire wind water etc. Magic, but you also get cool inventive stuff like this anti magic sword whose blade's edges cut through magic, and whose flat surface part (don't know sword terminology, sorry) reflects it. That's pretty badass.

I also find it shares a lot of the strengths I remember seeing early on in Naruto. The concept is derivative but it's combined with a real world mythology that makes it its own unique experience. And speaking of mythology, the world building in this has been fantastoc so far. In just two volumes we've gotten complex but understandable magic systems, international politics, supernatural mysteries, class warfare and a whole lot more. I'm not going to pretend like I don't see faults in the story, in fact right now I'd say it's good but not at all great, but I also see plenty of strengths and lots of potential to get better.

Hopefully it won't pull a Naruto Shippuden on me though.
