Odd, whatever works for whomever, I would prefer a single relationship to work with though less head ache!

No.

I'm against it. Most people can barely handle one partner, why multiple?

Sure. If it's not hurting anyone, why not? Even if it is for religious reasons (I still won't forget one of the main stories in that Rolling Stone issue that had a Mormon family with 80 fucking wives, at least from what I can remember).

Polygamy forces loyalties to be divided up between the wives and the husband. It naturally fosters a sense of competition among the wives and husband is left having to handle more than any individual can possibly handle. If we care about stable relationships, if we care about dedication between partners then polygamy should not be accepted by a reasonable society. The justification "so long as it doesn't harm people" is misguided.

I personally see it as immoral, but I also think that people should not need permission from the government to have a consenting relationship with another adult/other adults.

Polymarriage on the other hand I am completely against due to it being an easy way to game tax and immigration laws and complicate child custody and assets in divorce. If laws were change to remedy that problem I'd be ok with it being legalized despite not personally supporting that lifestyle

For me marriage is largely a financial and legal arrangement anyway. I see no problem with it.

I don't want to be in one marriage let alone one where there is a 3rd person involved.

If by poligamy you mean something like polyamory, I see no reason why not. Emotional stability will be the main problem, as most people cannot handle knowing your partner is someone else partner as well (jealousy, anyone?).

However, most times, polygamy is just polygyny and the wives mostly don't have much freedom or a say on the arrangement. This type of polygamy, I am completely against. Same for any arrangement where full consent and disclosure, and free choice is withdrawn.

On the legality of it, marriage is just a contract for mutual support and shared responsibilities on raising children. The emotional aspects are not part of this contract, they are part of the relationship. Anything goes as long as everyone consents (and is able to understand and consent freely) and can read and understand the conditions of the marriage contract.

Problem is, people will do whatever they want. Using laws to regulate behavior never worked. Polygamy is not legal in Brasil, it still happens in the classic wife+mistresses arrangement. Adultery is actually a crime since before the independence and it never prevented it from happening.

Polygamy is the fantasy of those who have never experienced marriage, but the absolute terror of those who have. . .
