Of the music you are complaining about, it is only a mere fraction of a percentage of what is really being created. What you allow yourself to listen to is what is being sponsored for distribution. It doesn't matter if it took 2 years or 2 hours to write a song, there are countless artists who have made hundreds, possibly thousands of songs that will never get media play, simply because it will not appeal to the masses.

If you want to make a difference in making the music YOU like to gain popularity, pay the artist. Pay their publishers. Buy their songs directly. Watch their videos, search their songs on the internet, DON'T EVER CLICK ON ANY OTHER ARTIST YOU DOUBT IS WORTHY OF YOUR EARS. Each action you make towards their work is a transaction on their popularity.

Music evolves and changes on different levels. New genres arise as well. If it gains traction, then the business of music has done its part. If you knew who controls what gets released to the public, you'd know there's no point in complaining. 10/10 These entities have extreme power, and to them, "if it don't make dollars, it don't make sense."

As a music analyst, tens of thousands of songs are submitted for release everyday. They have to be filtered out, from the bad apples, the obscure niches, the stuff that would be ok for other channels (like commercials, elevators, jingles, etc.) but not for mainstream. The ones with algorithms tweaked for popular music are first priority because those are the ones that will be snatched up quick for swift release, and guarantees those involved in that particular song will be paid. Sometimes, you have to return the song to the original artist and tell them to make changes if they want it to gain traction. They can be perfectly good songs, but if it doesn't fit mainstream criteria, they can't expect to get income from it.

And just so you know, Trap music is not rap. Rap is the verbiage in hiphop. If there are no vocals in the track, it is not a rap song. Trap caters to strip clubs, night clubs, and people who just want to dance. The "lyrics" within the song is just another instrumental sound that listeners psychologically relate to.

EDM is an extension of electronic (general) music. Those sounds had to be replicated from analog instruments and converted digitally. It is arranged digitally with the same general pattern as one would have done on paper. Saying it's not music is like telling a bestselling writer that they are not a writer, because they decided to type their work on a computer or tablet, rather than writing it on paper.

TL;DR: Don't listen to what you don't like. Spend time researching the artists and sounds you prefer to fill your mind with, and PAY for their music. Artists need to eat too.

I base songs on being good based on their tune + story/ lyrics
if they have no story in them i dislike them.

Which is why i hate instrumentals most of the time

excuse me but saying that instrumentals dont have story in them means you're saying that about the soundtracks in movies/animes/etc.
i'm sure as hell i won't feel the same intensity of emotions if the animes i watch didn't have their soundtracks in them. but whatever floats your boat m8.

this is out of topic but AnoHana's Last Train Home is an instrumental that makes you feel feels, even if you haven't watched the anime yet.

XD like i mean they do have stories behind them but they are not put in lyrics.

I have always not cared for music without lyrics i don't know why it just feels bland and empty like its missing a part of it just oh so incomplete.
Which makes me feel sad and empty.

Sounds like your bitching for no reason. Maybe stop listening to the radio and what you like instead of bitching about what is on the radio.
Nothing happened to music.

because people can't afford to make mistakes. People cant take 3-4 years to make an album. Thank the economy, thank the peoples choices for this, not the musicians.

How many actual new bands own their own label?

Again, just like anything in the past, if you haven't secured your spot, you will have to change the face of the music industry with music that will move a nation.

nowadays all you can hope for is the same shit over and over.

I wish to actually create some music that matters one day, but until then we must change the way we accept music in order to change it for the better.

I remember some study on the variation of music not just from piece to piece but from within each piece. The results supported the idea that variation has been waning steadily for the past 30-40 years. I personally think it's because most mainstream music is optimized for cheap speakers/sound systems which don't have a great representation of the whole frequency range and tend to focus on the bass beats to compensate.

I agree that as far as mainstream music goes I feel like metal has the best variation, but I find if I look hard enough I can find some great music of just about any genre. Yes, even rap...

(really its a similar situation to gaming... only that what appeals to the masses in this case is because of hardware rather than general preference)

Not taking into account the popular acts, there is really no better time to be a music fan. There are so many people releasing music from all over the world and it is available at the push of a button. People can self-release their material without the need for labels. Bands can self-promote and connect with the desires and wants of their fans. Also, you can listen to literally anybody you want at any time. Good music has never been more available. Part of the reason, music is declining is because of the fact that the industry wasn't prepared for the internet and things such as iTunes. Now, it is hard for labels to turn a profit and take chances on different artists. They want a sure thing and they want a product that is guaranteed to make money. If it seems manufactured, then that is because it is. Pop music is engineered to appeal to the broadest amount of people possible. Different and experimental artists aren't being pursued because alternative acts aren't profitable enough. These pop acts may be big, but they don't have staying power. They flare up and burn out only to be replaced. the acts that put time and effort into their craft will be the ones that are remembered and gain truly loyal fans. Nothing has happened to good music, but people must be willing to look. Either take the time to find out the diamonds in the rough, or be content with mediocrity. With all the resources at our disposal, nobody should be content with mediocrity when there is so much better stuff out there.

There is always good music. If you can't find it that reflects on you. I'm not sure what the "good times" where in your mind, but every decade has a mix of terrible and great music.

What's "in" changes and fluctuates, but unless a new genre is being invented overall genres are mostly static.

Bands are not making money anymore for one thing, the greats that were promoted and had great agents are dying and their music is losing it copyrights, so everybody is copying off each other now.
The internet helped the music to die. However, there are bands and individuals that are trying hard to put together decent melodies, and good cords. But are they making money? Hard to say, It seems the screaming scene is just a blight on music.
I listen to most electronic or Down Tempo, Chill, and Deep House. The classic rock is still good, but people need to start making their own songs, learning from the masters, and combine vocals, with electronic instruments and not be afraid to mess around with the medleys.
There is a lot on non-talent, garage band ‘wannabe’s’. People need to go to music school to learn to play and create. Not all of us have god given talent, to just 'Wing it'.
And screaming the lyrics will not get you any closer.
