What's an anime that was over hyped and completely ruined the series for you? How about an anime that was over hyped but it lived up to the hype?

For me:

Anime ruined by Over Hype: One Punch Man , just wasn't as good as everyone made it out to be. Positive I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't heard much about it.

Anime that lived up to the Hype: Haikyuu, The only volleyball I care to watch is womens, no need to explain why. Plus I'm a huge basketball fan and no matter how much I heard about Haikyuu there was no way I though I would like it anywhere near as much as Kuroko no Basket. Turns out i love them both, and eagerly waiting for season 3 of Haikyuu and Kuroko's extra game movie.

I don't see what hype has to do with you enjoying something or not. When you watch it, you either like it or you don't.

I think the idea is that you end up experiencing disappointment, which mars a sense of complete satisfaction.

I usually don't place much trust in hype. I really can't get too into something before I've actually experienced it. So I don't have anything that was ruined for me because of hype.

Clannad.
Seeing comments all over the forums saying it crushed their heart and that it was the saddest thing ever...

It was still worth though, because of Tomoya's trolling moments and Nagisa's dad.

Attack on Titan for me was so overhyped, everyone kept talking about it, and by the time I watch the first episode I was like "oh ok... I guess that's it..." and never watched another episode of it.

This is a hard one. I'm not one to really buy into other people's hype and praise (Life is Strange left a deep scar in my brain because of that), so whenever I see an anime, my thoughts usually form when I watch it.

But one anime I think kind of matches the description was Mirai Nikki. At the time, a lot of people loved it, including me. But over the years, thinking about the story again, I realized it wasn't as good as I thought at first. The character direction fleeted back and forth between different emotions as fast as a squirrel darting back and forth between acorn trees.

I remember when Bleach and Naruto first came out and people were all like, "ZOMG! Best anime ever!"

About a decade and a half later, the perspective is very different.

You probably already know what I'm going to say here, but I'll say it anyway:

Read the VN. The anime can only say so much about the story.

The hype never ruins a series for me. I never expect to have the same reaction as the masses. The most notable series that didn't live up to the hype for me was Cowboy Bepop, but I still somewhat enjoyed it.

The funny thing about Sword Art Online was that by the time I watched it, the negative hype was balancing the positive hype. I enjoyed it, but I had a lot of problems with it. So the conflicting hype made sense.

Kind of ruined by the hype:
Your Lie in April
I'm not blaming the hype alone. Maybe without the hype I would have never watched it anyway.
I have 2 major problems with it. The first is that it's too predictable and I'm not just talking about the plot. A few minutes in the episode and you could already tell what will happen in the rest of the episode. I wasn't expecting it. Because of all the praise it gets I thought the story must be unusual or surprising so the moment when I realized that the basic story was already told a thousand times before was really disappointing. My second problem was that I haven't seen the "glorious art" everyone was talking about. I only saw wasted potential. Show, don't tell. Would have been better for the music too.
But without the hype I still would have those problems with this show but maybe (if I would have watched it) I would have finished it because I wouldn't have been disappointed (over several months and as a "make me tired" Anime)

That being said I'm glad that there are so many hyped Animes out there because without the hype I would have missed a lot (too much to name them all).

One Punch Man was very entertaining and enjoyable in both comedy and action.

I'd say Kiznavier was the most overhyped series of the year.

I probably would enjoy the VN more, but I can't see myself getting into it since it's so massive.

Ruined by hype(kind of): For me the only one i can think of ruined by the hype is: ReLife atleast for me because everyone at least i knew in anime forums were talking about it being amazing and a great ride some even said it was a perfect anime but in my eyes it was kind of slightly above average imo and it wouldn't be slightly above average if there wasn't the plot twist but that's just my opinion.

Lived up to the hype: HunterxHunter 2011 this anime was extraodinary and some may argue it was underrated by people who haven't watched it yet but the community that did watch it hyped it up to the point where some were saying it was probably the best shounen they have ever watched and i understand why they said it now the story is amazing and definetly surpassed my expectations of the story.
