When are we getting it?

Flash is dead.

It's time to move on.

I'm so tired of all these laggy skips and jumps in my video.

HTML 5 is a much smoother, enjoyable experience.

There's been a ton of threads on this, and frankly last I recall there hasn't been much done about it.

Only thing I can contribute to this is this from another thread:

I don't know what would cause it to be a problem with one browser but not another besides flash things. I can't fix that but I can offer an alternative in the form of a chrome extension I made that can be found here. It replaces the default flash player with an HTML5 one that plays the HLS streams that are served to the apps.

Let me know if it helps.

All well and good for Chrome users, doesn't help us Firefox users.

I was looking for something like that for Firefox where I could force it to use HTML5

Just make the html5 player for premium members only if you guys can't figure out how to make it play nicely with your backend. It'd be a great testing bed too to convince your content providers that it's a viable option. If it goes well then everyone could be using it instead of just premium users once all the problems are worked out

And if HTML5 was important enough to you then you could always just use chrome for when you want to watch things on CR if you don't want to use it for anything else. A bit more trouble? Sure. But the option is there.

I'd like to see a HTML5 player. I have a 5th gen Kindle Fire HD. There isn't a CR app available and Flash for Android disappeared a few years ago so I am out of luck on this device.

When pretty much every other streaming service moving to HTML5 (Netflix, Funimation, YouTube, etc.) it's time for Crunchyroll to implement their own HTML5 player. Flash is being demoted by Safari, Firefox, and Chrome in their upcoming versions. The writing is on the wall...

Thanks for linking this!

In case anyone's wondering, the extension itself can be ported to Firefox fairly easily, given Firefox's WebExtensions movement to bring Chrome extension compatibility to Firefox.

The problem is that Firefox can't handle the "application/x-mpegURL" and "application/vnd.apple.mpegurl" MIME types for M3U playlists for HLS video.

The fix would be either Firefox adding support for these (AFAICT not a priority), or Crunchyroll implementing a different method of serving HTML5 video. Of course the ideal solution is Crunchyroll implementing an official HTML5 player.

Turns out it was easy to get the extension working on Firefox, after all!

I submitted a pull request to beardfist, we'll see if he wants to submit to the Firefox addons site, or if he wants me to do it instead.

See the code changes here: https://github.com/KolbyClark/Crunchyroll-HLS-Player/pull/1

Wait, so what does this actually do?

It pulls a hardsub encode for iOS from our CDN and runs it through a custom HTML5 player that is being loaded in place of the standard player.

Guess I'm going to bring this back up because it can't be said enough. Flash needs to go!

This is the only streaming service I use still using it.
